  6. BTEC Firsts in Travel and Tourism – summary at a glance

  7. Key curriculum differences • Redesigned units but some similarities in content to QCF units • Updated content to reflect changes in the sector, e.g. consumer technology • All the content needs to be taught but not everything is always assessed – check the assessment criteria and the assessment guidance for clarification • Unit 6: The Travel and Tourism Customer Experience – no evidence of practical skills application required (application required in Unit 11 - Diploma only) • Unit 9: Travel and Tourism Employment Opportunities – no requirement to undertake work experience as part of the unit (application required in Unit 15 - Diploma only) • Unit 10: Organising a Travel and Tourism Study Visit – must take part in a visit to achieve the unit

  8. 2 Internal assessment NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  9. Internal Assessment Teacher-led assessment remains at the heart of BTEC learning. 75%+ of the course is still assignments set – and assessed – by teachers and tutors. Clarified assessment criteria to ensure accuracy - particularly for Merit & Distinction Assignment checking service: free support service to help ensure assignments enable learners to demonstrate appropriate evidence across the required criteria.

  10. Assessment Feedback • Formative feedback • Is given at the interim deadline stage • Should look to encourage and guide learners to achieve higher criteria • Gives a prediction of the learner’s achievement based on current performance • Summative feedback • Given at the final deadline • Is the assessment decision • Gives full justification for the decision • Is considered the terminal point for the assessment. • It is at the discretion of the Assessor whether they will accept one further re-submission following summative assessment, and this must be authorised by the Lead Internal Verifier.

  11. Next Generation BTEC timeline (2013-2014) Registration OSCA Standardisation Materials Live - Lead Internal Verifier registers OSCA activities to be complete - Standards Verification activities start External Assessment All First Sampling to be complete All Sampling Activities to be complete NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  12. Lead Internal Verifier • One Lead Internal Verifier should be identified. • The Lead Internal Verifier will oversee the internal verification activity for the programme and ensure that it is consistently applied. • The Lead Internal Verifier is not expected to undertake all the internal verification themselves. • They will sample verification and assessment across the qualification and ensure that there is a suitable plan of activity, but they may not be undertaking anymore verification than other staff. • The Lead IV at a centre should always be the person at the centre who can speak with the most authority on the subject. • We recommend the QCF Lead IV also registers as the Lead Internal Verifier for the new NQF BTECs in their subject, as the responsibilities of the role are similar across all BTECs. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  13. OSCA Standardisation • The Lead Internal Verifier registers via Edexcel Online and accesses standardisation materials to use with their assessment team. • Use of the standardisation materials is compulsory, but it is not a “test” to obtain accreditation. • The Lead Internal Verifier confirms that standardisation has taken place (by checking the relevant declaration on Edexcel Online). • Best practice is to complete the standardisation prior to any assessment decisions being made. • Standards Verification sampling should not take place until the Lead IV confirms the activity has been completed. • New standardisation materials are available from September each year. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  14. Assignment Briefs • Authorised Assignment Briefs are available to centres. • Centres may create their own Assignment Briefs. • Assignment Briefs should cover whole Learning Aims. • Evidence learners generate should be assessed across the full range of assessment criteria, i.e. allow learners to access all criteria. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  15. Internal Verification • Every Assignment Brief should be Internally Verified, including Authorised Assignment Briefs. • This is the Internal Verification form for Assignment Briefs. • The form is very similar to the QCF BTEC form but is not identical NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  16. Formative Feedback • occurs at an interim date (outlined on assessment plan). • is a conversation with the learner about their progress against Learning Aim(s). • formalises all feedback to date. • aims to motivate learners to work towards higher criteria. • cannot be overly prescriptive, yet must be clear and constructive. • Following Formative Feedback, the learner is to work independently. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  17. Summative Assessment • occurs at the final deadline outlined on the assessment plan. • is considered the terminal point for assessment of a Learning Aim. • confirms assessment decisions. • justifies assessment decisions. Learners can re-submit work for a Learning Aim once after summative assessment, if authorised by the Lead IV. This may be using the same brief(s) or via a new brief. Controlled conditions should be used when necessary. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  18. Internal Verification • All assessment decisions must be Internally Verified. • This must be documented on this template. • The form is very similar to the QCF BTEC form but is not identical NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  19. Where to access the templates? • Templates are signposted as ‘NQF BTEC From 2012’. • These templates can be used as provided, or they can be adapted, providing they include all of the required information. • They can be found in the ‘Forms’ section of this page: • http://www.edexcel.com/btec/delivering-BTEC/quality/Pages/Key-documents.aspx NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  20. 3 Standards Verification NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  21. Standards Verification • Standards Verification is an annual process for the new next generation NQF BTEC Firsts. • Standards Verifiers will discuss the assessment plan with the Lead Internal Verifier and set the sample(s) required from this information. • The sampling window will be between January and May each year. • The Standards Verifier will sample: • Assignment briefs, • assessed learner work, • internal verification documentation. • Full details are published each year in the BTEC Quality Assurance Handbook. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  22. Standards Verification Sample selection • Standards Verifiers can only undertake sampling if assessor and IV standardisation has taken place. • A sample of 5 learners (or 10 if cohort is larger than 250) per completed unit selected. • The sample will cover the full range of grades awarded and should include all assessors involved across the programme, over the registration period for any cohort. • Only completed units will be accepted for sampling. Sample selection in the first year when certification is not required: • If no completed units are available for sampling, the Standards Verifier will support by reporting on the Assignment Briefs and any units that are completed in the first year. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  23. Standards Verification Sampling 1st Sample by Standards Verifier Release Block 2nd Sample required 2nd Sample by Standards Verifier Release Block Remedial action required Regional Quality Manager support to release certification NB: If certification is not needed in year 1 SV support can still be gained via a report on a part-sample, the sample will be completed in year 2 and an outcome given. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  24. 4 External Assessment NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  25. External Assessment • 2 external units: • Unit 1 The UK Travel and Tourism Sector • Unit 7 Travel and Tourism Business Environments • Paper-Based Examinations: Timetabled secure question papers sent out. Results are issued alongside GCSE Results. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  26. External Assessment • There is no limit to the re-sit opportunities for the externally assessed units, however we may issue a limit to re-sit opportunities in the future, if appropriate. • Award Qualifications have 1 externally assessed component. • Qualifications larger than Award have 2 externally assessed components. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  27. 5 Grading NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  28. Calculating the Unit Grade • At unit level, the grades available are; Level 2 Pass, Level 2 Merit or Level 2 Distinction, Level 1 or Unclassified. • Each unit is awarded an overall grade; made up of the achievement of the learning aims within that unit. Learning Aims are not graded on an individual basis. • The Level 2 assessment criteria are hierarchal. For example, a learner can only achieve a Merit if they produce sufficient evidence for all of the Level 2 Pass and Merit criteria. The table below shows all grading outcomes. If a learner fails to achieve the Level 2 Pass criteria, then the Level 1 criteria are assessed. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  29. Calculating the Unit Grade Example Assessment Tracker with a range of grades: NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  30. Convert the Unit Grade into Points • The table below shows the number of points scored per 10 Guided Learning Hours at each Unit Grade. For example, if a learner achieves a Merit for a 30 GLH unit, they would be awarded 18 points, 6 points per 10 GLH so 18 points. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  31. Calculate the Overall Qualification Grade NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  32. 6 Support NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  36. 7 Assessment Plans NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  37. Assessment Plan • An Assessment Plan should be produced and maintained. • Templates provided to centres to outline their timelines and assignment information. • Must be signed off by the Lead IV at the start of a programme. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  38. Assessment Plan – Activity 1 • In small groups, critically review ‘Assessment Plan A’, identifying potential areas for clarification and recommendations for improvement. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  39. Assessment Plan – Activity 1 • the plan includes externally assessed units (Units 1 and 7) which are not required. There will be no formative assessment date for these units, no internal assessment and no IV required. Exams are scheduled for 2 set windows each year (January and June) • the plan does not include mandatory Unit 4 - International Travel and Tourism Destinations. This must be completed as a mandatory unit or the qualification cannot be achieved • Unit 8 - Promotion and Sales is incorrectly identified as Unit 9 • there is no breakdown of when individual Learning Aims will be assessed. The plan lacks detail • the plan does not identify an assessor and IV for this unit. This is required to ensure SVs can select the appropriate sample NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  40. Assessment Plan – Activity 1 • assessment plans should identify all assessors involved across the programme, over the registration period for any cohort • the identified IV date is too late. Internal verification should be carried out ‘soon’ after the summative assessment date, to identify any issue with the assessment decisions and the quality of the evidence produced. • Units 9 and 10 have the same assessment schedule. These unit may need to be staggered depending on timetable and if work experience is being carried out and the date of the study visit. • resubmission date is too late to meet the SV timetable and submission of marks. All SV activity should be completed no later than 15th June 2014 - this would leave very little time to arrange the sample and send to the SV, particularly if remedial action was required. NQF SV Training – Travel and Tourism 2013

  41. Using the Assessment Plan • First Award • The sample will cover the full range of grades awarded and should include all assessors involved across the programme, over the registration period for any cohort. • Core unit: always request samples of learner work for the internally assessed core unit. • Optional units: request samples of learner work from at least one optional unit. Request more if required to cover types of unit, grades and assessors. • Certificate and Extended Certificate • Core unit plus samples of learner work from at least two optional units.
