  1. 2008 Southern Business Expo One Region — One Vision

  2. Today’s Message • Good News and Bad News • Connect SI — Blueprint for Success • What You Can Do • Sense of Urgency

  3. What is Different About Connect SI • Collaborative 20-county economic and community development strategy — measurable, transforming and sustainable • Positions SI to compete globally against country strategies • Views neighbors as resource partners rather than competitors • Understands that knowledge based, small, & innovative firms are the growth engines of our future…not industries of our past • Broadband strategy focus enables all 20 counties to benefit • Sees economic development as the job of every citizen • Collaboratively funded rather than grant dependent • Business plan based, action driven, results oriented • Bottom up — grass-roots driven

  4. Big Disconnect: Youth Brain Drain vs. Real Opportunity • SI is losing its most employable youth due to the perception & reality that there are not sufficient job opportunities here • Yet, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says: • “There will be a shortfall of 10 million workers by 2010” • “A demographic crunch is coming and will be exacerbated by a talent crunch that threatens to stall the very engines of economic growth” • SI can become a thriving global-hub if it: • Focuses on reversing the brain-drain • Builds its base of skilled manpower • Leverages its strategic mid-country location & unique quality of life environment to grow KBE workers

  5. Thank You!
