  1. Math 9 Lesson #4 – Writing Equations Mrs. Goodman

  2. What is anequation? When you place an equal sign between 2 expressions, you form an equation There is a left side and a right side to each equation

  3. These are all equations… 4 – b = 16 2c + 63 = 102 3 – x = 2x + 1 y + (-14) = 21 3x = 27

  4. Solutions If you plug in a number to a variable and it makes the equation TRUE, that number is a solution

  5. Are 3 or 4 solutions of the following equation? 2x – 4 = 4 We need to check each one…

  6. 2x – 4 = 4 2 (3) – 4 = 4 6 – 4 = 4 2 = 4 2x – 4 = 4 2 (4) – 4 = 4 8 – 4 = 4 4 = 4 YES!!

  7. Which is a solution to the following equation?7, -5, -2 2x – 1 = -6 + x I’ll check the first number with you…

  8. 2x – 1 = -6 + x 2 (7) – 1 = -6 + (7) 14 – 1 = -6 + 7 13 = 1

  9. 2x – 1 = -6 + x 2 (-5) – 1 = -6 + (-5) -10 – 1 = -6 + (-5) -11 = -11 YES!!

  10. LAST ONE! 2x – 1 = -6 + x 2 (-2) – 1 = -6 + (-2) -4 – 1 = -6 + -2 -5 = -8

  11. You need to buy ingredients for a pizza. Cheese costs $6.00, tomato sauce costs $2.50, dough costs $4.00, and sausage costs $3.50. You have $15. How much more money do you need? Write an equation to help you…

  12. First, how much do all the ingredients cost? 6 + 2.5 + 4 + 3.5 = $16.00 16 = 15 + x

  13. Check whether 5, 10, and 15 are solutions of the following equation: 10s = 165 – s Which numbers are solutions?

  14. The solution is 15

  15. If 6 is subtracted from three times a number, the result is 11 less than the number. Write an equation to find the number.

  16. 3n – 6 = n - 11

  17. You are in charge of running a dairy farm. Mickey the cow produces 500 gallons less than two times the amount of gallons that Henry the cow produces. Both cows together produce 1643 gallons of milk. Write an equation to find out how many gallons of milk Henry the cow produces.

  18. h + (2h – 500) = 1643

  19. Twice a number is added to the number and the answer is 80. Write an equation to find the number.

  20. x + 2x = 80

  21. Aaliyah has a stick that is 34 meters long. She is going to cut it into two pieces. One piece should be 8 meters longer than the other. Write an equation to figure out how long the shorter piece should be.

  22. y + (y + 8) = 34

  23. The perimeter of a triangular lot is 81 meters. One side is 16 meters, and the other side is twice the first side. Write an equation to find the length of the third side.

  24. 16 + 2(16) + x = 81 16 + 32 + x = 81 48 + x = 81

  25. Make up a word problem that this equation could fit x – 5 = 12 Pause the video and think about this for a few minutes on your own.

  26. Now it’s time to try some on your own… Use your notes to help you! Great job today! See you next time!
