  1. 21 bus berths each 100 feet long • 19 RIPTA bus berths (1 shared with Fung Wa) • 2 bus berths for Peter Pan and Greyhound. • 2,100 linear feet of curbing devoted to bus berthing. Kennedy Plaza Bus Operations • Activity in one weekday • 1075 RIPTA buses depart Kennedy Plaza • 30,000 people board or alight a RIPTA bus • Transfers between all carriers

  2. Kennedy Plaza Transit functions • Neighborhood bus stop • Transfer point for 45 RIPTA routes, Amtrak, MBTA, Greyhound, Peter Pan, & Fung Wa • Recovery (where buses wait and get back on schedule) • Switching drivers at shift end time • Fare product sales location • Swapping out a bus due to unforeseen circumstance

  3. NECESSARYKennedy Plaza transit functions • Neighborhood bus stop • Transfer point for 45 routes • Recovery (where buses wait and get back on schedule) • Switching drivers at shift end time • Fare product sales location • Swapping out a bus due to unforeseen circumstance

  4. Why not move transit out of Kennedy Plaza? • Decreases transit ridership • Increases cars and parking shortage • Lost revenue for downtown businesses • Have to repay federal investment • PPS says 30,000 bus riders are key to making large space active • With good design, transit can harmoniously coexist with many other uses • We can have it all…

  5. What is good design? • No more than 150 yards transfer distance (our current maximum) • Transfer without crossing car traffic • Decentralize waiting areas (mix those waiting for buses with others) • Reuse existing building and some adjacent berths to not have to repay federal investment • No left side boarding!!! • Design for 21 berths • Alternate design for 17 berths
