Biography • Born in Italy May 12 1820, and was named after the city. • Her parents then moved to England. • Her parents names were Frances and William Edward Nightingale. • Her family was actually very very wealthy also her father believed in education for everyone including women who very rarely in that time had a good education.

  3. Biography • Learned Italian, Latin, Greek, History, and math. • Was particularly good at math which applied when she developed the Polar area diagram.

  4. Personal Qualities • Florence Nightingale was bright, tough and driven to make people believe that putting the ill in sanitary places would be more effective to cure them more quickly.

  5. Motivation • When she saw all the sick men on the battlefield she was driven to cure them of their sicknesses.

  6. Hardships • In that time people believed women were not as good as men, but Florence became successful by herself.

  7. Accomplishments • Introduced sanitary science to the British army, preventing the death of many in the future, and revolutionizing the public health system in India. • Also published 75 page booklet on sanitary methods. • Brought down death rate in Crimean war.

  8. Interesting Information • Her nickname was the “lady with the lamp”. • Suffered from Chronic Fatigue syndrome. • Refused to marry because of the devotion to her work.

Four questions I would like to ask my Change Seeker: • What was it like living in times when women were not as appreciated as men, and were not as well schooled as men were back then? • In the Crimean war what was it like attending to the poor defenseless men who were terribly injured? • What was it like being rejected to help the soldiers in the English army who were injured? • What was it like upsetting your family because they did not accept your dream of becoming a nurse because they thought that nurses were women who were poor?
