  2. Making the Process work • Time Commitment and Schedule • October – December • Exact dates to come pending grant monies • Approximately 5-6 sessions in all (more than one may occur in a day)

  3. The Lesson Study Cycle

  4. Session 1: Planning & Study • What will be the school-wide focus and subject area for the lesson? (e.g. HOTS and math) • Identify a topic and standard for lesson • Consider the standard(s), students’ prior knowledge, existing lessons and research related to your lesson topic. • Plan the lesson taking into account our school-wide focus, your long-term goals, as well as your specific goals for the lesson and unit. • Write a detailed teaching-learning plan (form will be provided) • Specify data observers will collect

  5. Session 2: Conducting the Research Lesson • One team member teaches the research lesson to identified class. • Other team members observe and collect agreed upon data • Observers are focused on watching what the students are doing during the lesson.

  6. Session 3: First Post Lesson Discussion • After the first teaching of the lesson, team will debrief adhering to a structured agenda with a designated facilitator and note taker. • The discussion will focus on data collected during the research lesson. • Based on the discussion, team will come to consensus on any necessary lesson revisions.

  7. Session 4: Second Teaching of Lesson • New team member will teach the revised lesson in another classroom • Observers will collect data during the lesson

  8. Session 5: Second Post Lesson Discussion and Final Reflection • Team will gather again to debrief re-teaching of lesson • Team members will consolidate what they have learned (about the subject matter, student thinking, instruction and other facets) • Results will be summarized in a presentation or in writing • Discuss what worked well in your lesson study process and what you would like to change the next time around.
