  2. Plant Damage Brainstorm How can pests cause negative effects on plant growth, production, and overall health?

  3. Check your List! Pests can: • Take away resources • Eat plant tissue • Eat seeds and fruit • Bore holes • Remove fluids • Retard growth • Degrade plant tissue quality • Disrupt metabolic processes • Others?

  4. There is Optimism Plant damage is easy to observe, diagnose, and prevent with a little knowledge of: • Pest types • How pests cause damage • How to eradicate or deter pests • Pest life cycles

  5. Types of Pests Pests include: • Insects • Mollusks • Nematodes • Vertebrates • Weeds • Plant Disease Agents

  6. Insects • Chewing • Sucking • Boring There are different kinds of insects based on their eating habits:

  7. Mollusks and Nematodes Mollusks include: • Snails • Slugs Nematodes – soil borne insects

  8. Vertebrates Vertebrates include: • Birds • Rodents

  9. Weeds Weeds are undesirable plants. • Weeds can hinder plants by competing for resources, such as water, space, light, and nutrients. • Any plant can be a weed if it is growing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  10. Plant Disease Agents Bacteria, viruses, and fungi Although plant disease agents are organisms and considered pests by definition, they hold a special distinction that will be examined more closely in Lesson 9.2 Diving into Diseases.

  11. Methods of Pest Control • Biological • Lady bugs and parasitic wasps • Chemical • Herbicides, pesticides, and repellents • Cultural Practices • Crop rotation, clean equipment, and quarantine • Physical/Mechanical • Cultivators, hoes, and mowing
