  2. Introduction • Life-Changing Meals • Lesson Context

  3. Choices • Pair off with another student and indicate to each other which choices you prefer: 1. Dog or cat? 2. Coffee or tea? 3. Appetizer or dessert? 4. Rise early or stay up late? 5. Spring or autumn? 6. Burger or salad? 7. Beach vacation or mountain vacation?

  4. Choices • Life is full of choices. Some are merely matters of personal taste, while others influence the very course of life. • Let’s see what Solomon had to say about the latter.

  5. Wisdom’s HomeProverbs 9:1-6 • Preparations (vv. 1, 2) • Invitation (vv. 3-6)

  6. Wisdom’s Invitation • Read Proverbs 9:1-6. 1. Describe Wisdom’s dwelling. • It is a house she built with seven pillars. 2. What is the menu for her dinner? • She has meat, bread, and wine to furnish her table. 3. How does she invite her guests? • She sends out her servants, and then she calls from the highest point of the city.

  7. Wisdom’s Invitation • Read Proverbs 9:1-6. 4. Who are the invited guests? • All who are simple and lack understanding. 5. What are the benefits of visiting Wisdom? • The guests will learn how to live and walk in the way of understanding.

  8. What Do You Think? • What is one specific lifestyle change you can make to reduce the “noise” that interferes with your hearing Wisdom’s call? • Digging Deeper – What accountability procedure can you adopt to keep you on track in that regard?

  9. What Do You Think? • What types of relationships should we sever, if any, to avoid ungodly influences? • Digging Deeper – How does your answer fit with Matthew 28:19, 20; John 3:16; and 1 Corinthians 5:9, 10?

  10. Becoming WiseProverbs 9:8-10 • Accepting Instruction (vv. 8, 9) • Fearing the Lord (v. 10)

  11. Wisdom’s Invitation • Read Proverbs 9:8-10. 6. What’s the difference between rebuking a scorner and a wise person? • The scorner will resent the good advice, but the wise person will appreciate it. 7. What happens to a wise person who receives instruction? • He or she will become wiser.

  12. Wisdom’s Invitation • Read Proverbs 9:8-10. 8. Where does wisdom begin? • With the fear of the Lord.

  13. What Do You Think? • What are some ways to make it safe for fellow believers to give us constructive criticism? • Digging Deeper – What, if anything, is there to be learned profitably from the wisdom of the world? How do Acts 5:34-39; 1 Corinthians 2:6, 7; 10:20, 21; Colossians 2:23; and James 3:13-16 help shape your response?

  14. Folly’s HomeProverbs 9:13-18 • The Woman (v. 13) • The House (v. 14) • Temptation (vv. 15-17) • Departing Gift (v. 18)

  15. Folly’s Invitation • Read Proverbs 9:13-18. 9. What kind of a woman is Folly? • She is loud and unruly; she’s simple and knows nothing. 10. Where does Folly go to invite guests to her house? • Like Wisdom, Folly calls to people from a high place in the city.

  16. Folly’s Invitation • Read Proverbs 9:13-18. 11. What guests does Folly invite? • She also invites the simple and those who lack understanding. 12. What nourishment does Folly offer? • Stolen waters and bread/food eaten in secret. 13. What dangers await Folly’s guests? • Death and the depths of hell.

  17. What Do You Think? • How can we work to turn down the volume on foolishness in our surroundings without denying the right to free speech? • Digging Deeper – Comparing Proverbs 9:3 with 9:14, what are the “high places” from which wisdom and foolishness proceed most noticeably near you?

  18. What Do You Think? • Which Scriptures do you find most helpful in strengthening your resolve to make wisely measured decisions? • Digging Deeper – Which one of those Scriptures is most “shareable”? Why do you say that?

  19. Conclusion • Only Two Choices • Prayer • Thought to Remember

  20. Only Two Choices • To anyone growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, the choice of breakfast cereals was limited. • If you are old enough, what cereals do you remember eating in those days? • Today many grocery stores have aisles filled with nothing but cereals. • What’s your favorite cereal to eat today?

  21. Only Two Choices • Truly we live in a world with an abundance of choices in a variety of areas. • However, as today’s lesson from Proverbs has pointed out, the essentials of life and eternity come down to only two choices.

  22. Only Two Choices • Two houses stand, but one will fall. Two meals are offered, but one is poisoned. • Two hostesses extend invitations, but one is deceptive. • It is up to each individual to decide which house to enter, which meal to eat, which invitation to accept. • Choose wisely!

  23. Only Two Choices • Pair off with another student and discuss the choices you have made. • As regards walking in the Spirit or walking in the flesh. • As to whether you seek for wisdom for your life from the Bible or the world. • In reference to where you expect to spend eternity.

  24. Thought to Remember The path of folly is not a lifestyle;it’s a death-style.
