  4. Blood • It contains 4 parts: • Red blood cells • White blood cells • Platelets • Plasma White Blood Cell Red Blood Cell Platelets

  5. Red Blood Cells • contain hemoglobin, which transports O2 to organs and CO2 away from organs

  6. White Blood Cells • fight infection

  7. Platelets • help blood clot

  8. Plasma • Liquid which carries blood components

  9. Blood Vessels • A network of tubes that carry blood • Contains 3 types of vessels • Arteries 2. Veins 3. Capillaries

  10. The ARTERY Arteries - carry O2 rich blood from the heart. Thick, muscular walls due to tremendous pressure. the thick muscle can contract to push the blood along. thick muscle and elastic fibres

Q: What’s the difference between a heart attack and a stroke? • Both are caused by an artery being blocked and blood not getting to an organ. • When blood cannot get to the heart muscle, the heart muscle starts to die – this is a heart attack. • When Blood cannot get to the brain, that portion of the brain starts to die – this is a stroke.

  12. A person is complaining that they can’t feel their fingertips and can’t move their leg. They are also feeling very confused. Question: Is this person most likely having a heart attack or a stroke?

  13. Answer: This person is having a stroke. The brain controls movements, feelings and thinking. Because blood, and therefore oxygen is not getting to their brain, that section of the brain is dying and can no longer do its job.

Help you partner fill in the missing side of their notes.

  15. Coronary Artery Disease and Heart Attacks Many conditions affect the function of the circulatory system. The most common heart problem is coronary artery disease, which can lead to a heart attack.

  19. The Heart • Pumps blood around body • Nerve cells (pacemaker cells) send electrical signal to contract heart. • Human heart has 4 chambers. • Heart beat depends on oxygen needed by body

Blood Circulation • Right side of heart pumps blood to lungs • Diffusion of gases in lungs (O2 in, CO2 out) • Blood goes to left side of heart and pumps into arteries • Arteries get smaller and smaller until they are capillaries • In Capillaries, O2 & nutrients diffuse into cells, CO2 out. • Blood flows into veins into right side of heart.
