  1. Emerging trends in ESL and UHT at mini dairy level. Kuldeep Sharma Suruchi Consultants At NDRI, Karnal Sep,24,2011

  2. A special tribute to the place which made me what I am today

  3. Food is a major source of hazards to human health • Food-borne disease is globally the single most common illness

  4. Agenda • What is a mini dairy concept ? • Indian rural context • Changing Demography • Market demand • Reasons for upsurge in demand • Challenges with existing technologies • Different UHT machineries for mini dairy

  5. What is a mini dairy concept • Mini dairy is not about mass production, It is about production by masses • Dairy is a fragmented industry and local milk is expected to be processed locally • An opportunity should be provided to the farmers to move up the value chain • The technology must warranty a sustainable growth

  6. Indian rural context • Milk production in India involves millions of small producers with little or no land, each of them raising one or two low yielding, non-descript cows or buffaloes • We have to introduce selectively various forms of technologies (Knowledge/skills) into the lives of poor people in villages • In the process, the economic well being of farmers can be secured

  7. Changing Demography • You may not find the “Bottom of Pyramid” in India now • Why ?

  8. Emerging diamond

  9. Market demand • In 2006, the demand of UHT milk in India was estimated at 244000* per day with a growth rate of around 20 %. • Watching the same trend it is expected to be around 600,000 lpd today. • Current growth rate is expected at 30 %** which means that there would be a demand of close to 2 million liters of milk per day in UHT alone by 2015-16.

  10. Reasons for upsurge in demand • Consumer wanting over choices • Convenience • Health • Quality ??? • Media * Result of 7 known brand of pasteurized milk showed TPC ranging from 1 million cfu/ml to 6.6 million cfu/ml as against an acceptable level of 30000 cfu/ml. Coliform were from 60 to 7,10,000 cfu/ml as against 10.

  11. Challenges with Existing technologies • High fixed cost • High cost of packaging • Delivering a benefit not valued by most of the segments • Large capacities • Luxurious solution to a necessity • High pressure to get large quantities of good quality raw milk means further investments for quality milk procurement infrastructure

  12. A smaller UHT line (ESL) for 1000 LPH
