  1. Sea Water Pollution

  2. Characteristics of Water Pollution • Water pollution is a large set of adverse effects upon water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and groundwater caused by human activities. • natural phenomena are not deemed to be pollution • An important effect of pollution is Eutrophication which is is the fertilization of surface water by nutrients that were previously scarce • Water pollution is a major problem in the global context

  3. Eutrofication

  4. Elefsina’sBay • Is located near Athens, the capital city of Greece • The three main pollution sources: • municipal wastes • industrial wastes • naval activities • the time for the water renewal of the inner gulf comes up to one month

  5. The Chosen Locations • Loutropirgos: because of the nutritious graduation from the west to the east side • Aspropirgos: because of the existence of Halivourgiki

  6. The Location

  7. The Instant Measurements • Loutropirgos: water’s pH → 7,98 salinity → 37,3 ppt conductivity → 56,2 mS • Aspropirgos: water’s pH → 8,07 salinity → 37,4 ppt % conductivity → 56,4 mS

  8. Measurements at the University

  9. Measurements:

  10. General Conclusions • Neither Aspropirgos or Loutropirgos is heavily polluted. • That can be explained by the existence of an island called Psitalia in which all the wastes are accumulated and primary treated.

  11. Specialised Conclusions: • Dissolved O2 > in Loutropirgos • Chlorophyll > in Aspropirgos • Nitrates > in Loutropirgos → So Aspropirgos is more polluted than Loutropirgos.

  12. Explanation • Because of Aspropirgos location • The existence of Halivourgiki & St.George’s stream

  13. Ways to Prevent Water Pollution • Action should be taken to clean Kifissos river. • This could be achieved by putting filters in the water so that the wastes won’t reach the sea. • Secondary Biological Cleaning should be done in Elefsina’s Bay
