  2. Project Summary • Windows Mobile is a operating system designed by Microsoft for mobile devices, namely smartphones • Currently holds a 7.9% share of the smartphone market • Windows Mobile 7 is the planned successor to Windows Mobile 6

  3. Project Scope • Intended as an upgrade to the already popular Windows Mobile brand (WinMo) • Touch interfaces, advanced media playback, rich web browsing, etc. • Be on the market as soon as possible, with an initial planned release date of 2009

  4. Poor Time Management • Delayed at least 4 times in the last year • WinMo phone sales are down 20%, while total smartphone sales are up 13% • Microsoft released WinMo 6.5 in the interim in an attempt to stay relevant • Poor estimation of required resources and schedule

  5. What Now? • Microsoft may now be unable, even with an adequate product, to salvage their market share • Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, has said that they “screwed up” Windows Mobile, and pledged that it will not happen again • Had more resources been allocated earlier in the project the landscape of the mobile phone market could be different

  6. Conclusions • Like many technology projects, both time and resource estimates were off • Because of multiple, summative circumstances the consequences of these errors are more visible
