  2. Peleus and Thetis • Eris goddess of discord was not invited • Throws a tantrum (and a golden apple) • Hera (power), Athena (wealth), Aphrodite (most beautiful woman in the world) • Paris has to choose… • Helen wife of Menelaus (Sparta)

  3. The Trojan War • Queen Helen of Sparta deserted the king Menelaus for Paris the prince of Troy. • Menelaus was brother to Agamemnon, King of Mycenae (overlord of all Greeks= powerful)

  4. Agamemnon supported his brother, so the Greek kings united and crossed the Aegean Sea to attack Troy, a rich city and an advanced civilization in Asia Minor.

  5. Troy was under siege for 10 years. • Agamemnon insulted Achilles (the greatest warrior), and Achilles refused to fight at Troy. Once Hector (a Trojan prince) killed Patroclus (Achilles good friend or cousin), Achilles once again took up arms and killed Hector

  6. Achilles was protected by the gods, but he was killed by an arrow to the heel

  7. Odysseus, a cunning Greek hero, devised a strategy to defeat the Trojans… • They sailed away as if defeated leaving a gigantic wooden horse.

  8. The rejoicing Trojans hauled it into the city gates.

  9. Hidden Greek warriors emerged at night and opened the gates to their comrades who sacked and burned Troy and were victorious in war. • Heroes such as Achilles & Hector found glory and death.
