  5. Major batttles Eastern Front Western Front Battle of Verdun- 10 month war between the French and German. It was an unsuccessful attempt for German to take offensive Battles of Marne- Germans invaded Belgium and Northern France and caused panic in France. • Stalluponen- fought by corps of German eighth army against Russian first army. • Battle of Tannenberg- German victory over Russian second army.
