  1. ALICE at LBNL Peter Jacobs • RNC accomplishments in heavy ion physics • Jet quenching at RHIC and LHC • RNC in ALICE: Physics, EMCal project, PDSF • Workforce projections

  2. RNC accomplishments in heavy ion physics • Development of the Time Projection Chamber for heavy ion physics: EOS → STAR • Development and leadership of STAR at RHIC • Discovery of collective flow at the Bevalac, CERN SPS, and RHIC • Co-discovery and detailed elucidation of jet quenching at RHIC • Development of a new generation of ultra-high precision vertex detectors

  3. RNC accomplishments cont’d • STAR publications with SPIRES TOPCITE 250+: • Elliptic flow at RHICK.H. Ackermann et al. (STAR), Phys. Rev. Lett. 86:402 (2001). • Jet quenching@130 GeV C. Adler et al. (STAR), Phys. Rev. Lett. 89:202301 (2002). • Back-to-back hadron suppressionC. Adler et al. (STAR), Phys. Rev. Lett. 90:082302 (2003). • Jet quenching @ 200 GeV J. Adams et al. (STAR), Phys. Rev. Lett. 91:172302 (2003). • d+Au: J. Adams et al. (STAR), Phys. Rev. Lett. 91:072304 (2003). • STAR White Paper J. Adams et al. (STAR), Nucl.Phys. A757:102 (2005). • All six papers have primary authors from the RNC • RNC is among the world’s leading heavy ion research groups

  4. Photons (color-neutral) Jet fragments (color-charged) pTassoc > 2 GeV pTassoc > 0.15 GeV cos(Df) STAR, Phys Rev Lett 91, 072304 STAR, Phys Rev Lett 95, 152301 Jet quenching at RHIC

  5. Yield per trigger pTtrigger>8 GeV/c STAR, PRL 97, 162301 (2006) Jet quenching: the deeper we dig, the more we find… Jet quenching will be as central to the LHC heavy ion program…

  6. Casalderrey-Solana and Wang arXiv:0705.11352 Jet quenching in ALICE • Consider jet quenching similar to DIS • jet energy variation probes QGP at varying length scales…

  7. EMCal kinematic reach 175 GeV jets in ALICE acceptance Ratio of purple/red ALICE+EMCal enables world-class jet quenching measurements Jet quenching Dashed line = no jet quenching

  8. LBNL Personnel on ALICE • RNC Senior Staff Scientists • P. Jacobs • H.-G. Ritter • T. J. M. Symons • RNC Staff Scientists: • S. Klein • G. Odyniec • M. van Leeuwen (term) • RNC Postdocs: • J. Putschke • LBNL Engineering Division (EMCal Project Funds): • J. Rasson • D. Peterson

  9. Physics Activities 2008 In addition: 0.5-1.0 FTE for PDSF

  10. Physics Activities 2010 In addition: 0.5-1.0 FTE for PDSF

  11. EMCal Project Participation RNC: P. Jacobs (Deputy Contract Project Manager) S. Klein G. Odyniec J. Putschke H. Ritter J. Symons M. van Leeuwen LBNL Engineering: J. Rason (Deputy Contract Project Manager) D. Peterson • LBNL responsibilities: • Project management • Mechanical engineering oversight • Trigger • Software and computing (PDSF) • Physics leadership

  12. PDSF • PDSF at NERSC: • cost effective platform for large scale NP/HEP experimental computing • plays essential role in STAR • RNC contributes 1.5 FTE • PDSF in ALICE: Costs and implementation: see Ron Soltz’s talk NSD contributes 0.5-1.0 FTE for ALICE

  13. Impact of ALICE participation on STAR

  14. Summary of RNC at STAR and ALICE • ALICE: • EMCal project provides unique opportunity for highly visible, high impact new program that is fully consistent with RNC physics accomplishments and interests •  targeted, limited effort focused on EMCal and its related physics • STAR:RNC participation will evolve in next ~3 years: • Expanded effort on STAR tracking upgrades • Correspondingly reduced STAR analysis effort • Current high pT group will migrate to ALICE by 2008 • STAR jet physics and hard process analyses will be carried out by the existing “Soft Physics” group
