  2. Be able to prepare for hot and cold techniques Work to professional standards for hygiene, dress or appearance and the responsibilities of the sports massage practitioner or sport therapist

  3. Preparatory checks for hygiene • Ensure the cleanliness of clients treatment area and therapists to prevent cross-infection according to health and safety requirements for clinic and sport locations. • Use of anti-bacterial hand cleansers, surgical spirit and disposal of waste

  4. Equipment checks • Couch safety and stability for both portable and static couches • PAT for electrical appliances and to ensure qualified and insured staff aware of procedures, contra-indications and cleaning and storing of equipment following manufacturers instructions

  5. Environment checks • Ensure the environment is suitable for treatment regarding room temperature, noise levels as this will enable the client to hear you clearly and as private as the situation will allow. • Ventilation in enclosed rooms and screening when possible pitch side

  6. Sensation tests • Test the client for both sharp and blunt using cotton buds (near the area to be treated) • Test for hot and cold sensation using a test tubes. (One of each near the area to be treated)

  7. Preparation of the client • Clean the area to be treated with anti-bacterial lotion maintaining client dignity and ensuring accessibility for the application of either hot or cold packs • Use a barrier to protect the clients skin from coming into direct contact with hot/cold • Protect the superficial nerves from being damaged using a cloth. • Remove the clients jewellery as swelling may occur as a sign of inflammation

  8. Materials used • Ensure all the equipment you are to use are close to hand, clean and prepared • The test tubes filled with hot/cold water • Cotton buds prepared • Oil to prevent being ice becoming stuck to client • Fabric, scissors, tape or Clingfilm

  9. Records • Ensure your paperwork is prepared so the clients details personal, medical and lifestyle can be documented accurately and clearly
