New Deal High School Began in 2006, 9th-11th grades, serving 50 students Expanded to 12th grade in 2007 Science, math, technology teachers 2009 Began the process of becoming school wide All students by 2012-2013 All HS teachers 9th grade project – Cotton 10th grade project – Entertainment 11th grade project – Wind Energy 2010 Project Lead the Way

  7. What has changed in the way we teach at New Deal High School? Textbooks are a resource, not THE source. Less Worksheets More collaboration among staff Partnership with Texas Tech University Project-Based Learning Exploratory Learning Data-Driven Decision Making Technology Resources Externships Unity and Initiative
  8. What are we doing? High School students teaching Elementary students Blueprint Requirement #3 The Academy includes grades 6-12 or actively works with feeder middle or elementary schools to develop student interest in STEM education.
  9. The Task… HS students develop lesson plans for the elementary students HS students teach their lessons to the elementary students
  10. Projects we’ve done Chemistry Lab demos and experiments Chemistry magic show Physics labs Biology labs Saturday Science Labs UIL Number Sense Math Activities NASA Rockets Some of these projects are ongoing…
  11. What the high school students experience… Build a relationship with the younger kids Gain an in-depth knowledge of the content Develop multiple ways to communicate ideas Learn to collaborate with others Patience
  12. What do the elementary student experience? Someone “new” explaining the concepts Big Brother/Big Sister Having fun learning new things at school Exposure to a STEM curriculum
  13. Measuring the Results It’s a hit with the elementary students They remember activities and lessons from past years Increased interest in science and math Increased TAKS Scores

  15. Lessons Learned Create a list of lesson topics for the HS students to choose from Align the lesson to the TEKS Always be ready to rescue the HS students Have the students practice the lesson first!
