  1. Kentucky Aerospace It’s A New Day For D. Stewart Ditto II

  2. Kaic • Unification • Bring industry together under one voice. • Enhance collaboration • Facilitate partnerships • Promotion • Internally • Make Kentuckians aware of current capability and future potential • Externally • Create Ky Aerospace brand that showcases us as the focal point for growth in the Midwest and South • Business Development • Cyber Security • AS9100 certification assistance • Exports and ITAR • Other consultations • Education and Research • Promote and enhance industry driven research • Integrated workforce delivery system • Statewide K-12 Aerospace STEM Education

  3. Aerospace Exports 2017 Data from www.aia-aerospace.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/2017_AnnualReport_FF_Final_Web.pdf

  4. Rise of Kentucky Aerospace Last year, Kentucky’s top five export products were: Aerospace products and parts, at $11.7 billion 2. Motor vehicles and parts, at $5.5 billion 3. Pharmaceuticals and medicines at $1.8 billion 4. Resin, rubber, fibers and filament, at $1.1 billion 5. Basic chemicals, at $741 million

  6. The great Aerospace migration Decades ago the auto industry moved south, now aerospace is following that same migration path… • Tax incentives (as shown to the left) • Cheap energy costs • The auto industry's strong presence in the South has helped the region compete for aerospace jobs, in part because of the number of suppliers there that can provide goods to both sectors. • Low rates of unionization in the South and the many right-to-work laws. The "frequency and high costs of work stoppages, in union states, fairly or unfairly, reflect negatively in attracting aerospace work. • States in the South and Midwest also had the least expensive areas to live in 2013. • Military presence whose technologies and expertise are aviation-focused also help attract aerospace companies. •  Alabama: • The $158 million in incentives in 2012 for Airbus to locate in Mobile. • North Carolina: • Nearly $250 million incentive package the state offered in 2008 for Spirit AeroSystems to locate in Kinston.(Also GE Aviation) • South Carolina: • $900 million in tax breaks and other incentives the state is expected to provide Boeing. • Georgia: • The state agreed to provide nearly $30 million in incentives to encourage Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. to expand its operations in Savannah. Reasons Relocations

  7. Window of opportunity Kentucky is the focal point of Aerospace growth in the Midwest and South. We need to continue to control perception created by our export foundation. We must show the world that we are not only the center for exports, but we ARE the center of aerospace growth in the region.

  8. Companies in Kentucky

  9. Education and Workforce • The University of Kentucky (UK) led the development of Next-Generation Entry Thermal Protection. • Morehead State is one of the leaders in cubesat and other small satellite technologies, and is also now part of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). They have launched 6 satellites to date. • The University of Louisville (UofL) supports research in micro and nanotechnology and supports a rocketry program. • Western Kentucky University and UofL are also conducting International Space Station (ISS) experiments to understand colloid material behavior to enhance solar cell performance. • EKU is a national leader in pilot training. • Murray State has developed an Aerospace Engineering track in their department.

  10. Elevate Kentucky VISION Establish the state of Kentucky as an autonomous vehicle testing hotbed. In doing so, the state will work with companies to open our roadways, waterways, and airways for the testing of all autonomous vehicle systems. Roadblocks for Innovation in Technology: Restrictive Regulatory System Development of New Required Infrastructure Cultural Acceptance
