Fun Facts of Public Speaking Afraid?  Nervous?  Constipated?  You‘re not the only one! - Public speaking is the most common phobia in the world - even beyond the fear of death.  - Three of every four persons suffer from speech anxiety.  - Whether you're 17 or 52, male or female, millions of people experience this fear in any given year.

  3. History of Public Speaking Back then • Cave men style Back in the old days, where there was no refined speech, they relied on bodily sounds.

  4. History of Public Speaking cont. Now • Lieutenant Governor style Refined, attractive, concise, humorous, conversational… just plain good.

  5. What is public speaking? • Put bluntly it is speaking in public…preferably among an audience of humans. • In essence, it is a conversation, a connection, between you and your audience. NOTE: It is a 2-way thing kind of like love.

  7. Linking Ideas - Prepare your speech days beforehand so you can grind the speech into your head. • On the day of the speech, even when you are nervous, you will be able to recall your points. - Leave time to brainstorm creative ideas (introductions…transitions..etc.)

  8. Open your mind to what the audience wants - Remember public speaking is a conversation. - You may have all the information in the world but if its not suiting their needs, they won't be interested. - Be a hooker.

  9. V iolently, yet masterfully, execute your speech *And comes the actual speaking…. - Emoting emotions - Keep your posture - Be strong like fire and dynamic like water (contextualize) - Use your silences!

  10. Enjoy It • Public Speaking should be FUN FUNFUN! • If you don't enjoy it, why would they? • Smiles are contagious. • Your goal is to converse, not whip out a list of jokes you memorized • Let you and the audience…be ONE.

Frequently Pee-in-my pants reasons Wow.  I can't be as smart, witty, entertaining, funny, inspiring...whatever?"  Pshhhh! - The essence of public speaking is this: give your audience something of value.  If they're able to walk away with anything of significance, of meaning, they'll consider you a success.

  12. Tips • Don't pull a Kanye West. • Keep your head in the game. • Hands out of pockets • Good enunciation is better than bad enunciation • There are different styles, you will find yours • Practice with your stuffed animals or parents.
