  1. Cholesterol in CVD

  2. Cholesterol Found in the diet – Eggs, dairy, liver Component of cell membrane Lipid High levels lead to development of CHD HDL- carries 20% Blood cholesterol 2 types of cholesterol -carrying proteins HDL- gathers Cholesterol for eliminartion Low-density Lipoproteins (LDL) - bad cholesterol LDL- carries up to 70% Blood cholesterol from liver to body cells As level of HDL Increase, risk of CHD decrease High-density Lipoproteins (HDL) - good cholesterol As level of LDL increase, Level of CHD increases

  3. Risk of developing CHD may be predicted by measuring the ratio of HDL to LDL in the blood • High ratio indicates HDL level in high and LDL low = healthy • Low ratio= high LDL= unhealthy • Some evidence states that exercise can increase HDL levels • A fingerprick test can measure plasma cholesterol levels, but analysis of the HDL:LDL ratio must be done in a lab.
