  1. What to Do if You Have a Toothache

  2. Toothache • A toothache can be mild to excruciating. If the pain is too severe, you may miss work, school, or  routine errands. • If many people count on you, you can’t let a toothache weigh you down.

  3. Here are Tips to Help you get Rid of or Control the Pain when You have a Toothache:

  4. Rinse Your Mouth Using Warm Saltwater • If the pain starts outside of the dental office’s practice hours, you may, in the meantime, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater. • This will help prevent the spread of bacteria and also flush away any food debris that may have been trapped between teeth.

  5. Brush or Floss Your Teeth • If you can, do give your mouth a good and gentle clean. • The pain may be due to food particles stuck on tight spaces between teeth or on cavities. • If you’re not comfortable with using a traditional dental floss, you may also use dental floss picks. Be sure to cover the areas below the gumline.

  6. Apply A Cold Compress • Applying a cold compress on the side of the cheek where the affected tooth is can also bring relief. • Doing so can also help minimize swelling. You can apply the cold pack for around 20 minutes and do it every few hours.

  7. Take Over-The-Counter Medicines • If you don’t have any painkiller allergies, you may also take one to help ease the discomfort. • Be sure to follow the recommended dosage and be mindful of the side effects. Be sure to take it with food.

  8. Book an Emergency Dental Appointment • Whether or not you’re sure about the cause of your toothache, call a dental office near you and book an appointment. • It’s important to be seen by the dentist immediately so the specific cause of the pain can be identified. • Your dentist will take a look at your mouth and may also require x-rays.

  9. How Will You Know If The Toothache is Severe • A toothache may be severe if you’re also experiencing fever, breathing difficulties or unusual redness of the gums. • Don’t ignore your toothache especially if it the pain has been there for over two days. If anything, you will not have to commit to any dental treatment right away. • What’s important is for your mouth to get examined by a dental professional. If the cause is outside their scope, you will then be referred to a specialist or a physician.
