  2. WHAT IS “SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION”?

  3. SLA is.... “Second Language Acquisition” is the scientific study of the way people learn a langauge besides the mother tongue itself.

  4. WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF SLA? Identifying the external and internal factors why the learners acquire an L2 their way.

  5. Two case studies It talks about a detailed study of a learner’s acquisition of an L2 and it is typically both longitudinal. A case study of adult learner CASE STUDIES A case study of two child learners

  6. These case studies show us: 1) they raise a number of important methodological issues relating to how L2 acquisition should be studied. 2) they raise issues relating to the description of learner language. 3) they point to some of the problems researchers experience in trying to explain L2 acquisition.

  7. Methodological issues • These are some reasons which Schmidt was concerned: 1. How Wes developed the ability to communicate in an L2. 2. What it means to say that a learner has ‘acquired’ a feature of the target language. 3. The learners made considerable use of fixed expressions or formulas.

  8. ISSUES IN THE DESCRIPTION OF LEARNER LANGUAGE • Some issues in SLA are : 1. that learners make errors of different kinds 2. acquire a large number of formulaic chunks, which they use to perform communicative functions and contribute to the fluency of their speech.

  9. ISSUES IN THE EXPLANATION OF L2 ACQUISITION • An explanation of SLA must combine for both item and system learning and how it connects each other.

  10. Item learning : the expression as an unalyzed whole. • System learning : explanation of L2 acquisition must combine both those items and how the two interrelate.
