  2. Ultimate Goal/ Moksha • Samsara is the cycle of life • Salvation from Samsara • Salvation from incarnation • No more pain or suffering • Become one with the universe • No ignorance or selfishness

  3. Myths about gods • Ganesha: created by parvathi, killed by Shiva, revived by Shiva • Krishna: father tried to kill him • hanuman: picked up mountain with herbs

  4. Popular Books • Panchatantra Tales: purpose to teach moral and governing values • Jakative Tales: show self sacrifice, morality, honesty to people • Hitopadesha tales: written to amuse but implant life values

  5. Hindu Cosmology • Many different stories on how world was created • Lord Brahma is the creator • Maintained by Lord Vishnu • Destroyed and recreated by Lord Shiva • Belief not related to science

  6. Marriage • Mangni/Nischitartham : engagement ceremony • Muhurat: choose time and date of wedding • Engagement: exchange of rings • Period between marriage and engagement is full of family activities • Clothes for women: sari or lehenga • Clothes for men: dhoti or sherwani • Wedding ceremony: 3 hours long • At the wedding venue: bride waits for the groom, then after he arrives they exchange garlands • Aarti: welcomes the groom into the house • Bride leaves the house after she is married • Reception: usually very very large, it lets friends and family greet the newly wed couple

  7. Clothes • Men: Lungi, Dhoti, Kurta • Women: Sari, Choli, Lehenha

  8. Rituals • Hatha Yoga-focuses on mind and body • Kundallini Yoga- spread Kundallini throughout the body • Namaste- Humble Greeting with meaning • Puja- Prayer • Ayurveda- A system of healing • Aarti- Removal of darkness

  9. Rituals (cont.) • Diwali- illumination, presents are given (New Years) • Holi- celebration of Krishna, Advent, and spring • Ganesh Chaturthi- birthday of Lord Ganesha

  10. Death Rituals • Bathed • Priest chants while the body is marked • Gives support to the departed • No cooking until the cremation • Lamp and water and death site

  11. How Hindus Live Their Life • Believe in Atman- a part of Brahman • Strive to achieve good karma • Life is to achieve Moksha • Dharma- rules to live by • Artha- having a successful life

  12. How to Achieve Mocksha To gain moksha, you must gain knowledge… • Spiritually- connection of atman and Brahman • By meditation- concentrate to unite with Brahman • By commitment- Dedication to praising a God • By good deeds

  13. Places of Worship Home • shrines: statue or symbols • offerings, placed before shrine Public • Temples  • no care= no deity  • priest resides in the temple

  14. Geography & Locations • -  Origin:  Indus River   • - Hinduism is most common in India (700 million)  •     (Nepal, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka) • -  U.S:  1.4 million followers • - The spread of Hinduism in the U.S is influential  • -Hinduism in Ghana-  fastest growing religion.

  15. Music &  Festivals  • classical music:  ragas- scales, melodies • improve • Goal of ragas= ecstasy  • Purpose:  convey feelings toward a certain god(s) • Many important texts~ comprised of songs and hymns 

  16. Festivals & Holidays • purify the vital power of nature  • Includes: magic, dancing, music, and worship • Holi-  celebrated on a full moon of March • very colorful  • Celebrates spring • originates from the legend of Holika 

  17. Five Daily Duties • Worship god • Study Vedas and other scriptures • Provide food for needy • Serve guests with love, respect, and reverence • Contemplate on teachings of saints

  18. Five Constant Duties • Dharme- righteousness • Tirthayatia- pilgrimage • Utsavia- holy days • Samskaras- Sacraments • Sarva Brahma- god is in all

  19. Hierarchy • Brahman- Supreme Being who creates all souls • Vishnu-preserves and sustains the universe • Shiva- destroyer and protects those from lust/greed/anger • Kali-in charge of death
