  1. DANGER! DANGER! ARTIFICIAL & SYNTHETIC COLOURS AND FLAVOURS AT WORK

  2. INTRODUCTIONArtificial colours provide attractive colors to the product. MAJOR CLIENTS FOR CHEMICAL INDUSTRYFood and Pharmaceutical industry were the two major clients for the increased sales of the Artificial colours and flavours.

  3. CONTROVERSIAL ASPECTThe most controversial aspect of artificial colours and flavours is the consumption by the children and the subsequent effect of the same in relation to the behavioral and learning abilities in children.AWARENESSAwareness pertaining to dangerous consequences in early life and after prolonged use of artificial colours and flavours has increased.

  4. MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTOF ARTIFICIALCOLOURS

  5. Hazards of artificial colours!HYPERACTIVITY:Defination : Hyperactivity is a diagnosable syndrome recognised by health professionals as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD). It includes the following symptoms:Distractibility, poor tolerance to frustration, aggressiveness, anti social behavior excitability, aggression, difficulties with coordination, lability of mood, anxiety, impulsiveness, disabilities of both cognitive and learning functions. Dickerson JWT: Diet and Hyperactivity. J Human Nutr, 34:167-174, 1980Miller M and Millstone E: Food Additives Campaign Team: Report on Colour Additives. FACT, June, 1987

  6. Hazards of artificial colours! Hyperactive Infant Leads to … Symptoms : Restless, irregular sleep patterns, excessive crying or screaming, poor feeders. Ref: Dickerson JWT: Diet and Hyperactivity. J Human Nutr, 34:167-174, 1980

  7. Hazards of artificial colours! Hyperactive Toddlers which Leads to … Symptoms : Seldom walk but run, incapable of playing with any objects for more than few seconds, impulsive behaviour with complete lack of any apprehension and fear. Ref: Dickerson JWT: Diet and Hyperactivity. J Human Nutr, 34:167-174, 1980

  8. Hazards of artificial colours! School going Hyperactive Children Symptoms : Restless, inattentive, distractable and frequently display aggressive and anti-social tendencies, academic performances generally poor and lower school grades. It can be a asypmtomatic also leading to Adulthood problems like Adult Alcoholism, Hysteria etc.* Ref: Dickerson JWT: Diet and Hyperactivity. J Human Nutr, 34:167-174, 1980 * Ref.: Nelson book of paed. Book 1 pg. 91-92 Vol. 15.

  9. OTHER SIDE EFFECTS OF ARTIFICIAL COLOURS

  10. Hazards of artificial colours! 1. Artificial colours worsen behaviours characterized by irritability. (Mattes and Gittelman Klien experiment.)

  11. Hazards of artificial colours! 2.Erythrosine, Ponceau 4R, Allura Red, Sunset yellow, Tartrazine, Amaranth, Brilliant Blue, Blue, Fast Red E, Orange GGN’.These inhibit mitochondrial respiration which results in Oxidative stress and mitochondrial disease. -Effect of organic synthetic food colours on mitochondrial respiration.Reyes FG, Valim MF, Vercesi AE. School of Food Engineering, State University of Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil. -Oxidative stress in human aging and mitochondrial disease-consequences of defective mitochondrial respiration and impaired antioxidant enzyme system Clin J Physiol. 2001 Mar 31; 44(1):1-11. Wei YH, Lu CY, Ma YS, Lee HC.

  12. Hazards of artificial colours! 3. Azo dye (like tartrazine) has been proposed as one of the source of potential genotoxic agents. Evidence for direct-acting oxidative genotoxicity by reduction products of azo dyes.Sweeney EA, Chipman JK, Forsythe SJ.Department of Life Sciences, Nottingham Trent University, England.

  13. Hazards of artificial colours! 4. Artificial colours cause skin rashes in Children. -Study of skin rashes after antibiotic use in young children.Huang SW, Borum PR.Department of Pediatrics, University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville 32610, USA

  14. COMMONLY USED ARTIFICIAL COLOURS AND FLAVOURS AND THEIR SIDE EFFECTS

Banned in Norway and Australia. Used in Shelcal Superkid

  16. SUNSET YELLOW FCF Formula : C16H15N2Na2O7S2 Chemical Name: Disodium salt of 1-p-sulfophenyl-azo-2-napthol-6-sulfonic acid. Side Effects : Urticaria, rhinitis, nasal congestion, allergies, hyperactivity, kidney tumours, distaste for food, abdominal cramp. Usage is banned in Norway. Used in Colimex drops, Shelcal Superkid, Crocin, Metacin

  17. CARMOISINE FORMULA: C10H12N2Na2O7S2 Chemical Name : Disodium salt of 2- (4-sulphol-1-napthylazo) -1-napthol-4-sulphonic acid. Side Effects : Carcinogenic. Banned in Sweden, USA, Austria, Norway Used in Paralife, Crocin

  18. ERYTHROSINE Formula: C20H6I4Na2O5H2O Chemical Name: Disodium salt of 9-o-carbosyphenyl-6-hydroxy2,4,5,7-tetraiodo-3-isoxanthone. Side Effects: Childhood hyperactivity Banned in USA and NorwayUsed in Ostocalcium, Dexorange .

  19. Propylene Glycol:A COMMONLY USED SOLVENT IN PARACETAMOL SYRUPS

  20. HAZARDS OFPropylene Glycol: Commonly used in Paracetamol Syrup

  21. Hazards of Propylene Glycol: Serum Osmolality in low birth-weight, premature infants, lactic acidosis, haemolysis and CNS toxicity in Children.Ref: Martindale, 32nd edition, pg 1622.1

  22. Hazards of Propylene Glycol: PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG) 1000 mg of PG is needed for disolving 100 mg of Paracetamol Concentration of PG exceeds far above that recommended by FAO/WHO expert committee.

  23. IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVETO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS?

  24. ALL PRODUCTS AT MEYER Contain only Natural Colours & Flavours

  25. 1) Sensitivity is extremely rare. 2) No allergic side effects. 3) Evidence of test on natural colour and flavours conclude that there were no reports of adverse reactions. (Role of natural color additives in food allergy, Lucas CD, Hallagan JB, Taylor SL. Adverse Food Nutrition Res. 2001;43: 195-216

  26. Conclusion: • Natural colours and flavours are superior to Artificial Colours and flavours because artificial colours are associated with: • 1. Hyperactivity in Children. • Mutagenic actions (as evident from clinical trials). • 3. Allergic symptoms like Skin rashes, Urticaria, diarrhoea, CNS toxicity, etc. • 4. Deficiency of essential micro-nutrients required for normal development of Child.

  27. Artificial colours and flavours should be avoided in the formulations because of their side effects. As such Paediatric preparations must be completely devoid of any chemical that threatens to cause allergic reactions. Drug industry should stop using these additives to offer the society better & safer preparations for human health.
