Launch of Energy-Smart Communities Initiatives (ESCI) by Japan and U.S. On the occasion of theYokohama APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, Prime Minister Kan and President Obama met and launched Energy-Smart Communities Initiative (ESCI)on November 13. Cabinet Secretariat Press Office ESCI became more concrete at the bilateral meeting between Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ohataand U.S. Secretary of Energy Chu on November 18 in Tokyo.

Successful Experience of Japan – in Low Carbon Model Town Project (LCMT) • Establishment of Task Force Japan • Experts from private sectors of Japan • Prepared the 1st Draft of “the Concept of the Low-Carbon Town in APEC” The draft “Concept” was circulated among Study Group A and LCMT Task Force members for their review. “The Concept" was finalized and distributed among LCMT Task Force members.

Japan's approach for driving ESCI • Establishment of ESCI Japan National Committee • Experts from industry, government, and academia of Japan • Information Sharing • Participating each ESCI project by providing Technical Support • Contributing EWG by presenting perspectives The kick-off meeting of the Committee was held on October 12.
