  2. What is a mineral? • A mineral is a naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure.

  3. What does it mean to be naturally formed? It is one or more of the 92 naturally occurring elements that are found on Earth. • It can be found in its pure form – element, which cannot be broken down or separate into a simpler substance by chemical means. • Example: gold • It can be made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds - compound. • Example: table salt (NaCl)

  4. What does it mean to be inorganic? • It isn’t made of living things. Inorganic Or Organic?

  5. What are the states of Matter?Solid, liquid, and gas. • A solid has a definite shape and volume. (a mineral cannot be a liquid or gas)

  6. What is a definite crystalline structure? • A solid, geometric form of a mineral produced by a repeating pattern of atoms or molecules that is present throughout the mineral.

  7. Homework: page 16 • Trace your hand. Write the characteristics of a mineral on your fingers. Use 4 or more colors. • Resource: textbook page 66
