  1. Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a sign of poor dental hygiene or a potential serious health problem. Bad breath can be an embarrassing problem for you and off-putting to others. Bad breath is estimated to affect 1 in 4 people globally. About 35 to 45 percent of the people in the world have some level of halitosis or bad breath. Bad breath is caused by many factors such as dry mouth, eating foods high in sugar and acid, smoking, tooth decay, etc. The key to preventing bad breath is developing good oral health habits and eating a healthy diet. If you have persistent bad breath even after brushing your teeth, then it is important to visit a dental specialist to find the root cause.

  2. Tips to Prevent Bad Breath 1. Maintain good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth properly, twice a day for two minutes. Also, floss your teeth once a day to remove plaque and bacteria build-up from between your teeth. 2. Choose a good fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride toothpaste helps fight germs and bacteria responsible for bad breath. 3. Rinse your mouth twice a day with a good antibacterial mouthwash. However, avoid using an alcohol-based mouthwash as it can dry out your mouth. Also, rinse and gargle your mouth with plain water after every meal. 4. Your tongue can harbor bad breath causing bacteria. Effectively clean your tongue with a scraper after brushing your teeth.

  3. 5. Stop smoking and chewing tobacco-related products. Avoiding these will not only prevent your bad breath but will also prevent mouth or oral cancer. 6. Chewing sugarless gums also prevents bad breath by stimulating saliva production which washes down food debris and bacteria. 7. Some medications can also cause bad breath. Make a list of all your medication and discuss it with your doctor. 8. Avoid coffee, alcohol, acidic drinks, sugary foods, and drinks. Eat foods high in fiber. Stay hydrated and drink lots of water to keep your mouth moist. 9. Make a habit to visit a dental professional twice a year for oral check- ups and teeth cleaning. Your dentist can easily detect the underlying causes of your bad breath after thorough examinations.
