  1. Geography The study of where things are, why they are there, and the relationship to people, things, ideas, and other places.

  2. History and Geography • These studies work together. • What makes a place special? • 2 branches: Physical and Human. • Physical Geography: Climate, Landforms, Weather, Water. • Human Geography: Study of the patterns of human life, changes made by people, and supplies from nature

  3. Theme 1: Location • "Where are we?"   is the question that the theme Location answers. • Two types of Location: • Absolute • Global latitude and longitude location • Street address • Relative • described by landmarks, time, direction or distance from one place to another and may associate a particular place with another.

  4. Theme 2: Place • What kind of place is it? • Places have both human and physical characteristics. • Physical characteristics include mountains, rivers, soil, wildlife. • Human characteristics are from the ideas and actions of people: buildings, roads, clothing, and food are a few examples. • What are some physical and human characteristics of St. Paul? (2 min quick write) (im thinking)

  5. Theme 3: Human/Environment Interaction • How do humans and the environment affect each other? • There are three key concepts to human/environmental interaction: 1. Humans learn how to live on the environment.2. Humans modify the environment.3. Humans depend to the environment. • Given the choice, where would you live?  Why?  • What is the environment like there? • How do people interact with the environment?  • How do the physical features affect us?

  6. Theme 4: Movement • Travel, trade, and communication have shaped our world in powerful ways. • Humans occupy places unevenly on Earth because of the environment but also because we are social beings.  We interact with each other through travel, trade, information flows and political events. • Not only do humans move but ideas also move; fashion, music, technology, even religion can move.  • What is another example of an idea that moves?  • How do we depend on people in other places?   • How would our lives change if our movement options changed?

  7. Theme 5: Region • A region is the basic unit of study in geography.  A region is an area that displays a unity in terms of the government, language or landform. • Regions can be mapped and analyzed. • Types of regions: • Formal: Defined by government or administrative boundaries. • Functional: An area defined by a function • Vernacular: Defined by a people’s perception
