Problems associated with Management of chemicals following • Inappropriate conditions of chemicsls storage facilities • Accumulation of these toxic substances in environment and human bodies • Availability of these substances on the local markets and private farms • Absence of permanent monitoring of chemicals in environmental media and food • Low public awareness and low awareness of public authorities about negative impact of chemicals on human health and the environment • Low capacity of NGOs to involve National and International project

Ongoing Projects • FAO - GEF funded project “Capacity building on Obsolete and POPs Pesticides in Eastern European, Caucasus and Central Asia Countries (EECCA) countries (MENR) • FAO funded Project on Inventory of DDT (Ministry Agriculture) • UNEP Project Demonstrating and Scaling Up Sustainable Alternatives to DDT for the control of vector borne diseases in Azerbaijan

  11. NGO activity Ecological Society “Ruzgar” realised activity on Elimination of “Hot-spot” in Dayikend under coordination and methodological support of “Ecoaccord”.

NATIONAL IMPLEMENTATION PLAN ON STOCKHOLM CONVENTION( 2006- UNIDO PROJECT) • The basic knowledge on this Project was book of “Pesticides and Environment” published by “Ruzgar” under coordination and consultation of “Ecoaccord” • 3 NGOs were involved to NIP Process as • “Ruzgar” –member of Steering Committee and member of pesticide group • “Ecoil” –Head of PCB group • “Ecoscop”- Public Awareness group

Lobbying of Government to eliminate of pesticide “Hot-spot” in Dayikend area • During January-March 2008 from Dayikend (Salyan district) to the Storage facility for toxic wastes transported • DDT- 2.0 ton • Polidafen – 40 ton (more 400 batts) • CaSO4 + Ca3(PO4)2 - 110 ton • Mixture Soil+ Pesticides - 855 Cub meter • For Restoration of 900 Cub meter pure soil transported into area

  15. NGO benefits -Cooperation for resolution urgent problems of the population - Raising of public awareness and creation of rational collaboration between NGOs and communities -Institutional and individual capacities development -Increase trust to NGO -Increase confidence of the capacity and attempts of the decision of other social-environmental problems
