  1. Disadvantages! Stop running around the halls, there have been complaints –The Office Staff

  2. What is a disad? • A negative off-case position • The affirmative plan causes something bad to happen • Examples: Spending disad, politics disad, federalism disadvantage, China sphere of influence

  3. What are the four parts of a disad?

  4. Parts of the disad • Uniqueness—the status quo, • CIR will pass now OR China influence in LA increasing • Link—how the plan disrupts the status quo • Ending embargo costs political capital OR US econ engagement crowds out China • Internal Link—what that disruption causes • PC key to pass CIR, CIR key to LA relations OR China influence in LA key to global economy • Impact—why that disruption is bad • LA relations solve wars OR economy collapse causes wars

  5. Uniqueness • How do you win the uniqueness debate? 1) Recency • Politics or DAs about hot issues, no more than a week old • China sphere of influence type DAs, several weeks 2) Qualified authors or sources -Politics DA, real news sources not blogs, bipartisan, vote counts 3) Brink—the status quo is not guaranteed -Politics, CIR has bipart support but it’s fragile 4) Predictive 5) Link and impact uniqueness

  6. Link • What makes good links? 1) Specific to the aff, but generics links ARE OK -Lots of types of economic engagement, lifting Cuba embargo vs. giving Mexico aid for something totally different 2) Diversity of warrants -money, type of policy, focusing attention

  7. Internal Links • Fewer the better • Logical • BAD example: Japan politics DA • Good example: China’s economy key to global economy

  8. Impact • Parts of an impact • Magnitude • Probability • Internal link causes the impact and impact will occur • Econ collapse causes nuclear war? Nuclear war kills everyone? • Timeframe • Turns case

  9. What is wrong here? • USFG spending increasing now • Renewable energy projects with Mexico costs a lot • Any new spending tanks the US economy • Causes great power wars

  10. Extending the DA 1) Impact overview • DA outweighs and turns the case • Impact calculus • Turn case • Read more impacts • PRO: external impact the 1AR has to read ev on or you have a conceded impact • CON: the 1AR can straight impact turn this new impact, you have to go for the DA and also spend less time • If they haven’t read impact defense then probably don’t read a new impact

  11. Extending the DA Go in 2AC order 2) Uniqueness -Extend 1NC card -Answer the 2AC non-unique card -read more uniqueness 3) Link and internal link -read new links (remember diversity of links is good?) -read your most specific links 4) Impact -answer their impact defense or turns

  12. Kicking a DA • When to kick a DA • NO: straight turned DAs • Time tradeoffs, how it fits in your strategy, is it a net-benefit • Concede defensive arguments not offensive arguments • Don’t concede impact defense that takes out one of your impacts

  13. Politics DA • Why do we love the politics DA? • Links to all affs! Debate issues outside the topic, quick timeframe, big impact • What does the politics DA say? • Obama Good: Obama pushing policy now, will pass, plan unpopular, Obama gets blamed, Congress doesn’t pass what Obama is pushing, what Obama was pushing was good • Obama Bad: plan popular, gets Obama’s agenda done, his agenda is bad

  14. Politics DA Links • Political capital • Winners win • Bipartisanship • Focus
