  1. Ms. Morris’ Lesson Aim: How does the body fight infections? Homework: Immune System Worksheet Do–Now: Can you write down the complete names for HIV & AIDS?

  2. Mini Lesson: Immunity 1.defends body from disease-causing organisms Antigens – foreign substances i.e. pathogens, germs, viruses, bacteria etc. 2. destroys & removes dead/damaged cells from body

  3. First Line of Defense: • Skin: keeps pathogens from entering • Mucus, cilia, sneezing, coughing: • Saliva

  4. Second Line of Defense: • Inflammatory Response: fluid & WBC’s attack pathogens in the area of infection (i.e. cut – swollen, red) • Phagocytes: WBC’s that engulf & destroy pathogens

  5. Third Line of Defense: • targets specific pathogens • B-cells (WBC): produce antibodies that destroy pathogen • T-cells (WBC): identify pathogens & distinguish one kind from another Antibodies – destroys Specific antigens

  6. HIV • Human immunodeficiency virus

  7. AIDS • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome • What do you currently know?

  8. Passive Immunity: antibodies come from another source (i.e. mother – newborn baby) Active Immunity: You produce your own antibodies by: • Having a disease i.e. chicken pox • Getting a vaccine i.e. polio, chicken pox etc.

  9. Vaccine: consists of dead or weakened pathogens; they trigger an immune response; body produces antibodies against that disease

  10. Activities • Part One – go to edusolution.com • Choose “test yourself”. Then choose “LE by topics”. Then practice the Regents questions on “Homeostasis”. • Part Two – Create your own PowerPoint by Groups! (See attached)
