Big trouble little China • Sun turns over presidency • Eventually China is ruled by warlords • WWI • China joins Allies in hopes of regaining land • Versailles Treaty gives land to Japan • May Fourth Movement • Students gather to protest the Treaty of Versailles • Desire strong modern nation

  4. C. Communist Party in China • Led by Mao Zedong established in 1921 • Supported by: • Lenin in Russia • Peasants • Unite with JianJieshi& the Nationalist Party • Together they fight warlords • Nationalist betray the Communist

  5. D. Civil War in China • The Long March • 100,000 communist soldiers flee on 6,000 mile long journey • Communist retreat to caves • About 8,000 survivors • Gain support in northwestern China • Civil War Suspended • C and N unite to fight Japanese invaders
