  1. Famous Photographers By: Andrea VanEtten

  2. Alfred Stieglitz 1900’s • Alfred Stieglitz was a American photographer and a modern art promoter. He was known for New York art galleries. Stieglitz went to a city college where his father worked and eventually began studying mechanical engineering in Berlin. He began work with Herman William Vogel who studied the development of photography. By 1901 Alfred considered himself a artist with the camera and began taking photographs. • Venetian Canal 1894 • Going to the start 1905 • Georgia O’ Keefe • Winter-Fifth Avenue

  3. Ansel Adams 1902 • Ansel Adams was born in San Francisco, California. He was diagnosed hyperactive. When he was twelve he taught himself to play the piano and read music. Although his love for photography didn’t come fast he eventually made the transition from a musician to a photographer. • Adams was a visionary figure in nature photography. Many of his photos are black and white. At the age of 17 he got a job as a custodian at Yosemite National Park and that is where his interest grew for photographing nature. • What drew me to this photo is the use of value. The leaf in the middle demonstrates the lightest light and the background demonstrates the darkest dark.

  4. Henri Cartier-Bresson 1908 • Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in France in 1908. He was both a artist and a journalist. The first time he saw photographs in illustrated magazines he knew that what he wanted to do was photography. He was influenced by art-movement and French surrealism. In his photography he found hidden meanings in everyday life. • I like these photos because they demonstrate everyday life. They show how another person is living and their emotions.

  5. Dorothea Lange 1930 • Dorothea Lange is mostly known for her photography of the Depression era. • She was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1895 She attended the New York Training School for Teachers. But she received her first photo job with the famous photography Arnold Genthe. She took a photography class at Columbia State, in 1918 she officially started her own portrait studio. • In 1936 she started taking photos of slaves, farmers, and women of the high-planes. This pictured appealed to me because the depression was a sad time for many people and Dorothea captured the pain and triumph many people endured during the Great Depression perfectly in this photo.. Dorothea’s photo’s create feeling in a magnificent way.

  6. Annie Leibovitz 1949 • Annie Leibovitz was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1949. She often moved around a lot due to her father being a colonel in the United States Army. • She took her first picture in the Philippines when her father was stationed at a base, and eventually attended attended the San Francisco Art Institute. • In 1970 she launched the Rolling Stone magazine. She was named chief photographer for the magazine. • In 1975 she toured with the Rolling Stones and served as the concert photographer. • Leibovitz’s photography is often known for the use of color and the position in which the subjects are in photo. • I liked this photo because its portraying celebrities today as Disney characters, and I like Disney movies. • Also the use of colors and how the sky is makes me want to take a second look at the picture.

  7. Galen Rowell • Galen Rowell was born in Berkley California in 1940. He was always interested in wilderness and was introduced to it at a very young age. By the age of ten he was climbing mountains. Over the next fifteen years of his life he explored over 100 new routes of the High Sierra backcountry. This led to his interest in taking photo’s of the places he ventured. By 1979 he became a professional photographer with his small automotive business, within the next year he did his first cover story portraits for national geographic. • The reason why I liked Galen Rowell’s photographs so much is because the use of color. It catches my eye.

  8. Nigel BarkerModern Day Photographer • Born in London on April 27, 1972 Nigel Barker grew up with a total of 5 siblings. He went to boarding school and had a interest in chemistry, physics, and biology. His original plan was to continue studying medicine but began modeling and decided that ultimately he wanted to be a photographer. He opened his own photo studio in 1996 called StudioNB. It is currently located in Manhattan's Meat packing district and is immensely popular. • I like Nigel Barkers photo’s because of the unusual placements ofthe subjects and the color. Every photo draws my eyes to it.

  9. Jason ChristopherModern Day Fashion Photography • He was born in Southern California and gained his interest in taking photos at the age of 14. At first he photographed wilderness around him, but quickly developed a passion for other things…like magazine and fashion photography. I liked these two photo’s first off because black and white photography is my favorite kind of photography and the pictures are just overall beautiful. If I was a photographer I would be interested in taking photos like these. • Jason Christopher's photography has been described as classic, romantic, and clean

  10. My Favorite PhotographerNigel Barker • Nigel Barker was born April 27, 1972 in London. He grew up with a family of 5 siblings. Before photography he was introduced into the world of modeling. He originally planned to go into the medicine field. But his mother entered him into a television show called The Clothes Show. Barker ended up being one of the finalists in the show and this led to his modeling career. He modeled for many high fashion designers, Barker continued this for about ten years. His modeling eventually led to a interest in fashion photography, and in 1996 he opened his very own studio names StudioNB. Currently Barker is the photographer and a judge for Tyra Bank’s (super model) modeling show America’s Next Top Model, and in 2007 he was a judge for the Miss America Pageant.

  11. Why do I like Nigel Barker’s photography so much? • I’m always draw to photos that use a lot of color, have the subjects in peculiar places, and have interesting angles. Nigel Barker’s photography demonstrates all three of the traits that make me second look a photo. Nigel has the ability to tell stories with his photography.
