  2. Overview • Not all resistance was violent • Used local movements to resist some policies or practices • Many colonies had a substantial amount of white settlement or race mixture • Most were created by minorities • Created nationalism

  3. Reasons for Movements • to establish their identities • to defend their rights and privileges • to present their grievances • to ensure their survival

  4. Ethnic Movements • Majority of societies today are multiethnic or multicultural • Most have minority groups who don’t have full rights • Ethnic tensions and movements have become a major source of violent and non-violent conflicts • 75% of on-going conflicts are ethnic based
