  2. What is it? • PTSD is a mental condition that is caused by a horrifying event.

  3. Why do people have it? • People who get this disorder experience a traumatic event that they cannot cope with easily.

  4. Symptoms • Symptoms usually start within three months of the traumatic event but can sometimes start occurring within a year of the event. They include: • Sudden feelings of sadness, fear, or anger. • Trouble paying attention or getting things done. • May have difficulty sleeping. • Feelings of nervousness, or being panicky, jumpy, and irritable.

  5. How to Treat PTSD Therapy and medication are both used to help control anxieties. Therapy types include: • Cognitive therapy • Relaxation therapy • Exposure therapy • Psychological debriefing

  6. Medicine Commonly used medication for treating PTSD: • Anti-depressants • Sedative (helps relax patient) • Tranquilizers (same effect as sedatives)

  7. Statistics • 50% of patients within health services of the community have PTSD. • 10% of women develop PTSD. • 20% of men are likely to develop PTSD. • At any given time, about 8% of all Americans have PTSD.
