  1. Bible Study Errors #2 by Robert C. Archer

  2. Bible Study Rules • Get an overall view • Make observations while reading • Interpret only after • Determining the context • Defining the words • Make application

  3. Examples • Taking things out of context • Someone has said “that a passage taken out of context can be made into a pretext for anything.”

  4. Examples • 1 Corinthians 7:1 1 Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. • Used to teach celibacy in spite of (1 Tim. 4:1-5)

  5. Answer • Consider the context • 1 Corinthians 7:26 26 I suppose therefore that this is good because of the present distress--that it is good for a man to remain as he is

  6. Examples • Failure to define words • Example: Did Jesus go to hell? • No – a study of words helps us to understand

  7. Examples • One Hebrew word and three Greek words translated “Hell” in the KJV of the Bible • Sheol (Hebrew word used 65 times in OT. Means “the world of the dead”)

  8. Examples • Three Greek words translated “Hell” in the KJV of the Bible • Hades (Greek word used 12 times in NT. Means “the place of departed souls”) • Tartarus (Greek word translated “hell” one time. Means the place where evil angels await judgment”) • Gehenna(Greek word translated “hell” twelve times. Means “the place of torment where the wicked will live for all eternity”)

  9. Examples • Pit scripture against scripture • Romans 5:1 1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ • James 2:24 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

  10. Pit scripture against scripture • Paul taught that justification does NOT come by: • Works of the Law of Moses (Rom. 3:28) • Perfect law keeping (Rom. 3:27) • But Paul also taught: • That justification comes by obeying from the heart (Rom. 6:17-18) • Faith must be obedient (Rom. 1:5; 6:16; 16:26)

  11. What James teaches • James teaches that faith that saves is faith that obeys • He is not saying that we are saved by works separate from faith, but saving faith works (obeys) (Jas. 2:14-26)

  12. Summary • Paul is not teaching salvation by “faith only” nor is James teaching salvation by “works only”. Both are teaching the salvation comes by faith in Christ expressed by our obedience to His will.

  13. Examples • Failure to keep figurative language figurative • Binding of the devil (Rev. 20)

  14. Examples • Failure to rightly divide it (2 Tim. 2:15) • The Greek word for “rightly dividing” literally means to cut straight. • We must be careful – not everything applies to us. • Thief on the cross (Luke 22:39-43)

  15. Examples • Pick and choose what to accept • Bible teaches that we are saved by • Saved by grace (Eph. 2:5) • Saved by faith (Jno. 3:16) • Saved by baptism (Pet. 3:21) • Bible teaches that God provides our salvation by grace and we accept it by faith (Eph. 2:8) • What kind of faith? (Heb. 11)

  16. Examples • Failure to keep literal language literal • Prov. 22:15, 23:13-14 • One writer said: As with Psalm 23:4, “rod” is not necessarily literal, but is as God’s discipline and consistency of truth with consequences of wrong behavior. In Psalms as with discipling children, comfort is found with knowing boundaries and securing guidance from a wiser being.

  17. Conclusion • We can understand the Bible! (Eph. 3:4) and if we can understand it we can understand it alike.
