  1. Formative Assessments for European Explorers Unit3rd Grade By: Donald Barbour Kim Mahan Kami Buchholz West Salem Elementary

  2. The formative assessment will focus on four explorers (Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce de Leon, Jacques Cartier, and Christopher Newport). Throughout this unit students must be able to identify and understand the locations that each explorer landed, their motivations for exploration, their sponsors, and their achievements in landing in the New World.

  3. Assessment Using KWL Chart • The first formative assessment is to start with a KWL chart to establish what the class already knows, what they hope to learn.

  4. Assessment with Q and A • Read Our World Far and Wide on all four explorers as a preview. • Ask Q and A discussion questions about each explorer as your read their profile.

  5. Highlighting with Q and A on each Explorer • Students read and highlight important facts on explorers. • Teachers asks questions from highlighted sections. Once narration is through, click on picture below to see student booklet.

  6. Worksheet Assessments on Explorers • Review reading from Our World Far and Away on the explorers and introduce worksheet. • Worksheets will focus on location of landing, motivations, and sponsors of the explorers. • Grades are based on proper location of each explorers’ landing, their motivations/sponsors, and achievements.

  7. InteractiveWebsites and Quizzes Once narration is through, click on links below. • Interactive websites allow students to practice their knowledge of information, plus learn new information while actively participating in the site. • On-line quizzes are quick assessments that teachers can use for grades or a check system.   8. Explorer Timeline Assessment • Using the Timeliner 5.0 Software program, students must correctly place the explorers and dates on a timeline along with their country, sponsor, and landing. Once narration is through, click on picture below to see student timeline.

  9. Explorer PowerPoints for Assessment • Each student will be given one of the four explorers to make a PowerPoint presentation. • Grades are based on correct sponsor, obstacles, achievements, and corresponding information and pictures. Once narration is through, click on picture below to see student PowerPoint.

  10. Qwizdom with Explorers Once narration is through, click on picture below to see Qwizdom quiz example. Quizzes located on G Drive. • Qwizdom is an interactive way to test students’ knowledge of material. • Students must score at 75% or higher to prove retention of information.

  11. Final Assessment with test on all four explorers. • Students take final assessment to gauge retention of material. • Must perform 75% or higher to prove mastery of material.

  12. Finish KWL Chart and Review • Finish placing “What I Learned” on the KWL chart. • Review unit one last time with Q and A session.
