  2. Who is the perfect student? • Someone who is… • Interested • Eager to learn • Involved • Comes to OH • Does all of the required work (and MORE!) • Talks in class, asks interesting questions • Has a positive attitude towards learning the material

  3. How to encourage this behavior in all of your students • Theories of Intelligence • Consequences of the Theories

  4. Encouraging positive learning behaviors in all of your students • Your mission as a TA: • Be a LEARNING assistant for your students! • I.e. figure out how to help your students learn…don’t just present the material!

  5. Techniques to encourage incremental learning • Explain what the theories are • Specific strategies to… • Explain what they need to do as students • Do what you can to encourage an incremental perspective as their teacher

  6. On their side…tell them what to do and how to do it! • Teaching the theories… • Literally explain good learning strategies • Check up on them

  7. On your side…how to teach incrementally • Presenting information vs. presenting frameworks • Using the materials around you • Asking questions • How to praise

  8. Differing levels of previous knowledge • You are not the only teacher in the room • Pair up students strategically • Pick on everyone in the room • Give praise where it is called for

  9. Reconciling reality with how we want to teach… • How do students really react to the theories? • Are they convinced? • Theory resistance • Regression in the face of challenges • What can you do!?!?!
