  1. Transnational Access in HEAPNET FP7 (Ground-Based Observatories) Andrea Santangelo Institut für Astronomie und Astrophysik Tübingen HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  2. Outline of the talk A summary of thougths towards Transnational Access Activity • Our Previous proposal • TA-ViDa • TA-Deep Sea • Ground Based Observatories • What To Do ?  A few toughts HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  3. TA the HEAPNET FP6 proposal • Implementation of a Virtual Observatory for Cosmic Rays and Gamma Rays data (GB + SB) • Included both the construction of archives and software tools • It was based on three Virtual Data Center: Roma2 (INFN), München (MPI-M), Paris (APC) HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  4. Pamela 50 MeV- 270 GeV MAGIC 50 GeV- 10 TeV HESS 100 GeV-50 TeV AGILE, 15 keV-50 GeV Cosmic Rays ? GLAST LAT 20 MeV-300 GeV GMB 10 keV- 25 MeV Neutrinos ? TA-ViDa, participants HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  5. MM High-Energy Observatories 2004-2020 SRG/ROSITA/Lobster AUGER AUGER Nord, Radio, Acoustic JEM-EUSO AMS MAGIC II (XEUS) GLAST UHE-CV MAGIC HESS Gamma CTA HESS II (SIMBOL-X) Agile ANTARES NEMO NESTOR ICECUBE KM3NET Amanda Integral XMM-Newton 2004 2004 2006 2006 2014 2014 2016 2016 2010 2010 2012 2012 2018 2018 2008 2008 2020 2020 Kascade Grande ARGO Pamela HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  6. TA-ViDa, evaluation A good Idea, but better implementation needed 3,5 +/- • “None of the three satellites have been launched” • Well this would be solved by the end of the year • What about the policy on the data ? (See Aldo’s Talk) HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  7. TA-ViDa, evaluation (2) • “MAGIC and HESS: committal of the data ?” • Well this is a delicate question… HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  8. What About MAGIC ? • A rather structured proposal from MAGIC • Open Observation time up to 100 hours… • Member of MAGIC should be included • Proposals will be processed through the TAC • Data will be processed with standard tools • Data will be stored in the public area Resources are needed • 3 Postdocs • 300 k€ per year HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  9. TA-ViDa, evaluation and critic (3) • “MAGIC and HESS: committal of the data ?” • And from HESS ? • Up to 10% of data is open for Guest Observer… • Members of HESS in the proposal… • Transnational Access can be evaluated… Again, Resources are needed! HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  10. TA-ViDa, evaluation (4) • “Clarify what is offered in the way of access ..” • “Make the case that Users need to travel to the data center..” • We should really develop an exchange program which involves scientists of the participant institutions and external scientists… HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  11. And the neutrino observatories ? • Should be the current data taking experimentincluded in the TA ? • What is the current policy for public data and data sharing ? • What are the current needs in terms of coordination of observing strategies ? (Alerts, TOO, simultaneous campaign …?) HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  12. MM High-Energy Observatories 2004-2020 SRG/ROSITA/Lobster GLAST MAGIC II (XEUS) (SIMBOL-X) Gamma MAGIC HESS AMS CTA AUGER AUGER Nord, Radio HESS II UHE-CV JEM-EUSO, Acoustic Agile ANTARES NEMO NESTOR Amanda KM3NET ICECUBE XMM-Newton Integral 2004 2004 2006 2006 2014 2014 2016 2016 2010 2010 2012 2012 2018 2018 2008 2008 2020 2020 Kascade Grande Pamela HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  13. The near future: VHE Gammas, CTA • An “Observatory type” project more than an Experiment • Open Policy, 50 % Guest Observer Programme • Data shall go public after some time, typically 1 year • Service to the Community through a Scientific Data Center HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  14. The Near Future: Neutrinos • ICECUBE • No Data will go public • Collaboration with external scientists and support is welcome • KM3NET • Data will go public (?) • “way and means” will be developed • Interest in participating to the TA (?) • Wide discussion in the context of the “Preparatory Phase proposal” that will happen before HEAPNET I3 HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  15. Cosmic Rays Observatories ? • AUGER intend to fully participate to the multi-messenger approach at the core of the I3 proposal • Does this include the TA activity on the ViDa Center ? • If yes: “how” should be clearly defined in the proposal… HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  16. FP6 HEAPNET TA proposal 2 • Access to underwater deep sea infrastructures • Regarded as multidisciplinary underwater laboratories • Interest for the broader community of researchers acting in the field of deep sea science HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  17. TA-Deep Sea, evaluation Strongly Criticized • “Non at the core of the I3 proposal, which is the advancement of HE Astroparticle Physics in Europe” • “The community has not expertise in marine biology or marine science…” • A significant rebuttal appears difficult! • If we intend to propose again such an activity, it should be carefully and substantially re-oriented HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  18. Considerations: TA-ViDa • The Vi-Da should be proposed again • Should be extended to the Neutrino fishing and to the Cosmic Ray Observatories • The Data policy for the current generation of observatories and *more important!* For the future generation should be assessed and actuated • A joint activity on standard data format, reduction and analysis tools, data storage, data distribution is required • Visit Exchange programs should be put in place and into action HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  19. Considerations TA-ViDa (2) • We can learn from space observatories • Open Programs, Core Programs, Data rights • Clean data in standard final products, service and support to the Observers community • The TA can support and integrate the NA: common observational strategies for Transients Observation, Simultaneous Campaigns, Global trigger definition, can require exchange visits. HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam

  20. Considerations TA-Deep Sea and more • The rebuttal is critical… • Do we want re-orient the TA, or leave it on the shoulder of the Neutrino colleagues, bit if “yes” how ? • Should we think to new TA ? • Exchange work and visit for the experimental activities of the HEAPNET community ? • We have some time to think and get organized, but not so much… HEAPNET III meeting- 19-20 Feb. Amsterdam
