  1. Sample Organization and Protocol Plot Design Update FIA Core Band MeetingOctober 14, 2015 Troy Heithecker Mark Hatfield

  2. SO and PPD Overview • Brief overview of two modules • Current project status • Demonstration of modules as they stand • Next steps, major obstacles • Questions/Discussion

  3. Sample Organization Purpose: Organize the high-level structure of a forest inventory in a flexible and descriptive manner • Organize data into logical cohorts • Ability to handle varying cycles/subcycles • More precisely describe samples • Describe populations that are not states • E.g., special studies and Urban

  4. Sample Organization High-level Entities: • Population • Population Structure • Project • Series • Time Period • Field Sample

  5. Sample Organization Status • Currently scheduled to be released with Urban FIADB this fall • Urban implementation will show the efficacy module • Then discuss future implementation in NIMS • Core FIADB??? • Overlapping functionality to existing NIMS systems • Implementation more complicated • Involves fairly large changes to existing data/systems • Haven’t fully committed resources to this phase of project • Don’t have resources that could currently be committed

  6. Protocol and Plot Design (PPD) Purpose: Capture a generic meta-model of the information contained within a given protocol • What measurements collected • Levels (e.g., CWD) • Which population entities • Measurements (e.g., DIA, Height, Width) • Which plot design elements • e.g, Transect 1, 270, 24’

  7. PPD Cont. • Provide detailed, query-able meta-model of data • Self-documenting information • Archive-able • Historical protocols and meta-data • Comparisons between protocols • Flexible • Many-to-many relationships allow reuse • Can accommodate many different unique protocols

  8. PPD Cont. • Changes across multiple protocols complex and difficult to analyze and track • Capture as much of this meta-data as possible • Helps analyst to detect important changes and account for them • Little or no reliance on expert knowledge field guides/protocols

  9. PPD Status • Two full protocols nearly populated for Urban • Template for core FIA data entry completed • Collecting information for current core protocols across all regions

  10. Demonstration • Screen share with Mark Hatfield

  11. Next Steps • Sample Organization • Will be released with first version of Urban FIA • “Porting” to core FIADB is not a simple task • Requires redesign of many tables • How many times StateCD in FIADB (38 by my count) • Protocol Plot Design • Continue to populate protocols • Develop a UI/Management System • Continue DB design • Plan release
