  3. A race to be the first men to the South Pole • An 1800 mile round trip, on foot, pulling sledges ‘man-hauling’ • -30 degrees for 4 months • Died with 4 team members on return from the South Pole – • starved and frozen by a freak storm • 11 miles from a supplies depot

  4. His diaries were found by their bodies ‘We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course, and the end cannot be far’ ‘It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more’ Last Entry ‘For God’s sake look after our people’

  5. At the point of that last photo they still had 900 miles to travel back to safety. They died 140 miles short of completing the journey, after 1600 miles of sledge pulling. UK, end to end, twice. • The story has become one of the most famous polar exploration stories.When the news of his death was received in the UK there was a response similar to that when Princess Diana died. • There was a huge public donation to support the families of the five deadmen. • Streets, school houses, even orphans with no surname were named after Scott.

Schools had supported the expedition • Sledges • Sleeping bags • Dogs • Ponies • So the tragedy was keenly felt all over the nation • Hailed as a hero and the ultimate in teamwork, bravery and sacrifice • Led to the foundation of the Scott Polar Research Institute – a leading polar science authority to this day • A big big story in our history

  7. The Nationwide Teamwork Challenge ...using the Centenary to benefit young people

  8. What is it ? • You pull a wheeled sledge, as a team, to complete your Teamwork Challenge. • You become part of a unique nationwide enterprise. • 5,10,11, 100, 1766 miles - as a team - you decide how many in your team and how far. • On a cycle path, tow path, quiet road or sports field.

  9. How do we take part ? • Form a team • Decide a place • Choose a date • Decide which charities you want to fund-raise for.

A few suggestions • The last 11 miles as a competition • 100 miles • 140 miles (to complete Scott’s journey) • 883 miles to the pole • 1766 miles to the pole and back Notable dates 1st November 1911– Scott Departs for the pole 17th January 1912 – Scott reaches the pole 29th March 1912 – Final diary entry

  15. Your team • Any number, any distance • We suggest 5 people, as a team • Each person pulls a small wheeled sledge at 5mph (a slow easy jog) • Fundraising as a team project • A target, from £1 to £200 for each person • Divide the funds raised between the charities. Sponsor logos School logos

Project management • Recruit, train and manage a sledge pull team • Fitness and physical training • Teambuilding and leadership • Fundraising • set a team target for fundraising – and exceed it • choose popular local charities • Sponsorship • Contact local businesses and organisations, sell logo space on the sledges, raise funds from them to support local youth • Media and communications • Communicate to your whole community, fundraise with donate by text and online giving
