  1. Charlie knows that something isn’t right… Charlie begins to feel symptoms of depression

  2. Who does depression affect? • Depression will affect approximately 20% of people aged 13-21, or 1 in 5 • A lot of the time, young adults, like Charlie, don’t realize what is happening of why they are feeling the way they do until they seek guidance or support. • Watch the following video, and think about some of Charlie’s behavior so far in this novel, and if they fit some of the criteria outlined in the video.

  3. When diagnosing Depression… • When diagnosing depression, most times doctors or health care providers will ask a series of questions. • Let’s look at a potential scale that has been developed specifically for adolescents. • Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale

  4. Take a moment to complete the scale for yourself • When you have completed the scale, this is the scoring criteria: • If you answer: • A – give a mark of 0 • B – give a mark of 1 • C – give a mark of 2 • D – give a mark of 3 • Please add together what mark you receive.

  5. Results • If you scored a 6-10 or below, this would be considered the a potential range, meaning that there is potential for depression to develop. • If you scored a 10-14, you may be experiencing a difficult time, and your scores are increased because of this situation or you may be experiencing symptoms of depression. • If you scored more than 14, you will want to consider talking to someone about your feelings, and emotions because this is considered a high risk score. • Don’t be upset or panic about your score. IF you’ve received a high score, we can discuss it. If you’re concerned about your results, there may be something going on that you weren’t even aware of, and we can talk about that. If you have a low score, that is important as well, so that you have knowledge of your own mental health.

  6. My Bittersweet High School ExperienceBe prepared to share one of your responses with the class, as part of our speaking and listening curriculum. • When reading My Bittersweet High School Experience, think about and write about the following: • Kate felt that no one was willing to support/help her. Do you believe this to be true, or was this a feeling that was brought on by her depression? • Do you think leaving school is always the best for all people with depression? Why/Why not? • Do you believe that Kate hated high school or hated how she felt during that time? • Have you had experiences that you look back on and realize that they have affected who you are and your ideology? That without those experiences, you wouldn’t be who you are today?
