  2. Fifty forty or fight • Slogan used by democrats in mid 1840’s • A territory claimed by the U.S. and great Britain • Located in the northern part of Oregon • Many proposals were sent but were rejected • people from the manifest destiny thought the U.S should just take the entire territory (north of the 54 40 line) or if necessary, fight for it • Polk signed the treaty of Oregon which ended it peacefully by extending the border of the U.S and British north America along the 49th parallel • SIG: created the states: Oregon, Washington, Idaho, parts of Montana, Wyoming and British Columbia

  3. Walker tariff • Named after secretary of treasury Robert Walker • Activated by the democrats, the tariff made major cuts in the high tariffs created by the black tariff by the Whig party • Reduced tariffs from 32% to 25% • SIG: increased trade, one of the lowest tariffs in American history

  4. Manifest destiny • A 19th century belief in America that the U.S was destined to expand across the continent. • Used by democratic-republicans in mid 1840’s to justify the Mexican war • Denounced by the Whigs in 19th century • SIG: the idea of spreading the idea of democracy across the world is still used today

  5. Oregon territory • U.S. territory from august 18th to February 14 1859 • Highly wanted by U.S and Britain • Admitted to the union • It had 4 capitals at different points in its brief history: 1: Oregon city 2: Salem 3: Corvallis 4: then back to Salem • SIG: had states said earlier in it

  6. Mexican-American war • WHO: U.S. and Mexico • WHEN: 1846 to 1848 • WHAT: war • WHY: Mexicans didn’t like the annexation of Texas, which they still thought it was there territory even after the Texas revolution • WHERE: Mexico and Texas • SIG: one of the stepping stones to the civil war, influenced the Wilmot proviso, U.S. victory, gained the territories of California and new Mexico and forgave the Mexicans for their debt they owed, the treaty of Guadalupe hidalgo ended the war. Vs.

  7. Wilmot proviso • document that would have banned any slaves in any territory acquired from Mexico • First introduced by David Wilmot august 8th, 1846 • Passed through the house of representatives but failed to go through in the senate where the south was more represented than the north • It was passed again on February 18th , 1847 through the house of reps. But still failed yet again in the senate • And finally they tried putting it in the treaty of Guadalupe hidalgo but AGAIN it failed • SIG: led to the compromise of 1850

  8. Free soil movement • A third political party formed by anti-slavery Whig and democratic leaders • Formed in order to stop slavery spreading to the newly acquired territories and tried to abolish laws against free slaves in the union • Lasted from 1848 to 1856 • SIG: became the republican party
