  3. History of the University of Malaya • 1905 King Edward VII College of Medicine, Singapore • 1949 King Edward VII College of Medicine merged with Raffles College to form the University of Malaya • 1962 University of Malaya campus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  4. Mission To advance knowledge and learning through quality research and education for the nation and for humanity. Vision To be an internationally renowned institution of higher learning in research, innovation, publication and teaching.

University of Malaya in 2011 • 12 Faculties, 5 Institutes, 2 Academies, 3 Centres • Offering courses at pre-University, undergraduate and postgraduate level • 2,000 academic staff with 300 professors • 17,393 undergraduate students • 11,194 postgraduate students • 2,576 international postgraduate students from 80 countries

Accommodation & Living Expenses • Accommodation arrangements can be made at the Student Affairs Division. • Daily expenses vary depending on the needs and lifestyle of the individual : • Single student RM 1,000 - RM 2,500 p/m • Married student (with family) RM 1,800 - RM 4,500 p/m • Living expenses cover accommodation, food, books, clothes, entertainment and personal expenses.

  8. The Academic Year • There are 2 semesters in every Academic Year: • Semester 1 : 04/09/2011 – 12/02/2012 • Semester 2 :13/02/2012 – 17/08/2012 • For Semester 1, 2011/2012: • Lecture starts : 12/09/2011 (14 weeks) • Examination : 03/01/2012 (3 weeks) • Semester break : 21/01/2012 (3 weeks

  9. Mode of Study • The mode of study of postgraduate programmes are as follows: • Coursework • Students are required to acquire a specified number of coursework credits. Certain coursework programmes may require a submission of a research report. • Research (Dissertation/Thesis) Research is the principal requirement for attaining a higher degree. • Coursework and Research (mixed mode) • Students are required to complete coursework credits • and to submit a dissertation/thesis.

  10. Duration of Programme • The duration of studies depends on the various programmes and the progress of the individual student. Basically, the minimum and maximum periods are as follows: MinimumMaximum Masters : 2/3 semesters 8 semesters Clinical Masters : 4 years 7 years PhD : 4 semesters 12 semesters

PG ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS(i) Qualification • Master: • Coursework : A Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in the related field* • Coursework & Dissertation:A Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in the related field* • Dissertation only : A Bachelor’s degree (Hons) or its equivalent in the related field* • PhD: • A Master’s Degree or its equivalent in the related field* *Note: • Preference will be given to applicants having a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA ≥ 3.00 or its equivalent • Applicants having a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA ≥ 3.70 can apply directly for the PhD programme

  12. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT(Entry Requirement) • English Language Requirement • For International Candidates following courses and or writing dissertation/thesis in English. • Minimum English language requirement: • TOEFL 550 • IELTS Band 6 • For the Faculty of Law: TOEFL 600 IELTS 7

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT(Graduation Requirement) • English Language Requirement • For International Candidates following courses and or writing dissertation/thesis in other language EXCEPT English. • Minimum English language requirement: • TOEFL 500 - 549 • IELTS Band 5 • Complete English Language Course conducted by UMCCED

  14. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS(Graduation Requirement) - • Malay Language Requirement • All international candidates must Attend the Bahasa Malaysia Course conducted by the University
