  1. Mrs. Garnica’s Top 10 Title 1 Reading 2012

  2. 10) My Family • I have 5 grown children, and 15 grandchildren—I understand about family love and concern. The joys as well as the heartaches. • I also understand about feeling short on time and money. • Education is a Priority we choose, because we care so much.

  3. 9) Things I love to Do • Reading • Writing • Walking in Nature (especially the beach) • Singing • Time with Family and Friends

  4. 8) Why I’m Here • Learning to read makes a difference—to a child, a family, a community, and the world. • Mountlake Terrace Elementary is an amazing place to grow—for everyone.

  5. 7) Our Slogan • Do Your Best(Try Something) • Don’t Give Up(Never, Never) • We Believe in YOU!

  6. 6) Things Take Time • Allow time in your family schedule for reading, writing, speaking and listening every day. All 4 are a part of literacy. • Model all 4, and make sure your children have your attention as they do all 4. Your modeling and attention give reading, writing, speaking and listening more value.

  7. 5) Daily Exercise-Whether it’s your muscles or your mind, consistent daily “workouts” get better results. Homework- Make it Family Time • Have a certain homework or reading PLACE • Have a certain homework or reading TIME • Make it quiet (no loud music,TV off) • Be interested – make it a family study/reading time • Check the folder EVERY NIGHT • Sign the homework-reading page • Make it enjoyable and positive!

  8. 4) Keep It Interesting • Our brains like variety and fun. Encourage children to follow their interests, and show your interest in what they are learning. Ask them to : • Show you their work • Tell you about what they’re reading or • Read aloud to you or take turns reading with you. (15 minutes a day is better than an hour once a week.) • Tell you a favorite thing from their day. This could be anything. Remember, speaking and listening are a part of literacy (and a part of feeling connected).

  9. 3) Read for Meaning • Teach children to pay attention to what the author is saying. They should think while they read, and ask themselves: • Did that make sense? • Did that sound like the way we would say it in English? • Did the letters look right for the word I said—was it what I expected? • If not, they should use what would make sense, sound right, and look right for those letters and sounds, to try to fix it. If it’s still a puzzle, tell them the word (but let them try first).

  10. 2) Communication with me • Our school Coffee Email • Open House, Parent conferences, Literacy Workshop in November—we can talk during or after to address questions and concerns • Notes on their reading folder, if they use one with me • I’m happy to talk with you • 425-431-1654 • garnicar@edmonds.wednet.edu • Stop by and make an appointment(I’m here Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday)

  11. 1) Praise the Children and they will blossom. • I look for what they did right, and tell them what I noticed. I believe this is a good way for any adult to help a child. • Mutual Kindness and Respect are important parts of teaching and learning in my reading program. Teacher and students need to use kind voices, and be considerate of each other, in order for maximum learning to occur.
