  1. OACE Integrated Programs Summer Planning Project Recommendation #1 (Version 1) Team Members: Carolyn Chin, ABE/ASE Andrea Girton, CTE Paul Hallaman, ESL Susan Svensson, CTE

  2. Goal To build a sequenced scaffold of opportunities to support students as they attain skills necessary to be successful in their chosen Career Tech pathway (Allied Medical or Business Applications).

  3. Students will: • Acquire literacy and math (numeracy) skills with contextualized curriculum where appropriate • Apply these skills to workplace- related tasks and situations • Explore the nature of the work in that career pathway, occupational outlook, opportunities for advancement • Participate in general work readiness/.professional development discussions/ activities • Demonstrate mastery of competencies necessary to progress to the next step (CTE certification class, higher bridge, GED, another institution, employment)

  4. Rationale/Background: • The Allied Medical and Business Applications Programs have a proven track record of success. Job market trends and research, federal and local government supports, and needs identified by teachers and practitioners in the field all point to future opportunities in these fields. • Instructors and practitioners in CTE have identified students’ needs in basic skills and work readiness, which limit benefit from instruction and employability.

  5. Recommended Actions for Implementation FOR SHORT TERM OR IMMEDIATE ACTION: • Create and offer at least one upper tier bridging class per CTE Cluster to prepare students who need additional support for success in either Allied Medical or Business Application Pathway.

  6. Other Actions to be Considered… • Gap Analysis to identify the necessary tier levels entry and exit requirements • Implement an exchange of student speakers between bridge class and CTE pathway class. • Pay professional learning community participants for implementation of this bridging program. … in support of this recommendation

  7. Explore/Plan Now For Implementation At A Later Date: • Create a lower tier bridge class that prepares students for the upper tier bridge class The model would look something like this…

  8. Visual design based on Chapter 1: Overview of Bridge Training Programs, Bridges to Career for Low –Skilled Adults NOTE: Lower Tiers would be modified according to students’ skill level and would prepare them for the Upper Tier

  9. Issues for future consideration: • Career Technical positions in these areas are in high demand now but the job market may fluctuate, especially given the economy, changes in the health care industry, and federal health care policies. • We should regularly monitor these issues to assess the viability of expanding the CTE Programs and its emphases.

  10. And remember… “Don’t lower the standards; lower the difficulty of learning.” Lee Clark
