  7. Small Groups: The Change-Up a. What is Ebert's purpose in writing this review? b. Does Ebert use any of the 3 modes of persuasion? If so, give an example for each one you think he uses. c. How does Evert try to convey his purpose? What rhetorical devices does Ebert use when constructing this review? Name 2-3. Wikipedia: Glossary of Rhetorical Terms This list is LONG, but it has many good terms. These are a few common ones: tone, humor, diction, word choice, sentence structure, analogy, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, imagery, repetition, and others. d. How does Ebert structure the review? e. Is this review effective?

  8. Thesis Statements • The thesis is a claim that anchors a writer’s argument, and helps to organize sources, develop points, and ultimately lead readers to a convincing conclusion. • Guides readers into the essay by describing the purpose of your essay and outlining the organization of your argument.

  9. Sample (p. 585-591 FYW) • In “Language and Literature from a Pueblo Indian Perspective,” Leslie MarmomSilko illustrates “the importance of storytelling in the Pueblo culture,” using supportive examples, including the multiple techniques storytellers use, such as repetition and the continuous stories within one another. • Juliette H. Walma van derMolen in “Violence and Suffering in Television News: Toward a Broader Conception of Harmful Television Content for Children” uses logos, factual evidence, and statistics to portray how television news promotes violence in the media.

  10. NOT A GOOD THESIS • In his movie review of The Change-Up, Roger Ebert uses ethos, pathos, and logos to inform his readers about the film. What’s wrong with this?

  11. NOT A GOOD THESIS • In his movie review of The Change-Up, Roger Ebert uses ethos, pathos, and logos to in form his readers about the film. • Not specific enough about purpose or rhetorical strategies • All articles use a form of EPL. Does one stand out more?

  12. Let’s Write a Good Thesis Insert Thesis Here

  13. Thesis Tips • Identify article title and author. • Identify the purpose. • List the rhetorical strategies used by the author that you are going to analyze. This sets up the organization of your paper. • Be clear and concise. • Try to make it 1-2 sentences. • Make sure it’s grammatically sound.

  14. BA4: Developing Thesis Statements • Description: For your draft 1.1, you will write a rhetorical analysis. See the description of Draft 1.1 for a discussion of what a rhetorical analysis is and what you will be expected to do. To create your thesis, you need to have the following: 1) one primary text (specified by your instructor) that will serve as the object of your analysis, and 2) the results of your close reading of this text that you will use to formulate your thesis. To complete this assignment, compose three thesis statements that you might use in your draft 1.1. You may write 3 statements which could be used in three different analytical papers, or try out different thesis statements for a single paper.

  15. Draft 1.1 • After selecting your text and critically reading it, you will determine the writer’s purpose and intended audience for the text. • Once you have determined these elements, you will begin to analyze the text so as to determine the specific strategies the writer uses to achieve his or her purpose and to meet the needs of the audience. For example, you might choose to look at such elements as the types of evidence a writer puts forward and how he or she does so. Ask yourself if the writer uses evidence from sources, or if he or she tells stories from personal experience. Examine the sentence structures and word choice. How do these contribute to the author’s purpose? Evaluate the overall tone of the text, and determine how it does or does not contribute to the way in which it communicates to its audience. After you determine what these strategies are, consider how well these strategies actually work.

  16. BA4 (and beyond) BA4 and BA5 are going to help you get started for Draft 1.1. You will choose one of these 4 articles to analyze for Draft 1.1. BA4 is to help you develop a thesis for that draft. 1."Virtual Friendship and the New Narcissism" (FYW p.321-328) 2."Remark on HPV Vaccine Could Ripple For Years" http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/20/health/20hpv.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=health 3."Author Provides Evidence of "Hostile" Workplace Claim in White House" http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/09/20/author-new-book-provides-evidence-gender-issues-in-white-house/ 4."Retrofitting the Feminine Mystique" http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/18/arts/television/pan-am-playboy-club-and-whitney-new-on-tv.html?ref=television

  17. BA4 • All 3 thesis statements need to be dramatically different. Play around with order and sentence structure. Try different rhetorical strategies. • I encourage you two write 3 separate statements for one article (the article you would like to write your draft on). However, if you are unsure of which article you want to choose, you can do 3 separate statements on different articles, but again, the statements must be different. • Include a Works Cited for your article.

  18. Information • BA4 is due Monday, 9/26. • Our next class is 9/28 and BA5 deals with quotations. While you are reading your article for the first time, you may want to make notes of specific quotations you will want to use in your analysis. • PLEASE sign up for the bloghttp://kreindel.wordpress.com if you haven’t already. I will post things there and I may not send an email. • Office hours: Today, 2-3:30. Friday, 11:30-1. Room 468.
