  2. River valleys • Some advantages of residing in a river valley are protection from wind and access to water for fishing and agriculture. The river valleys were the first place for the complex societies to develop because there was plenty of water for them.

  3. Farmers • Farmers were able to control seasonal floods by building dams. They were able to bring water to their fields and also water their fields by connecting canals to the rivers and to lift the water from the canals you would need a shaduf. A shaduf is a large pole balanced on a crossbeam, a rope and bucket on one end and a heavy counter weight at the other. By pulling the rope it lowered the bucket into the Nile. The counterweight would raise the bucket. The farmer would then carry the bucket to the field and water it.

Like many people the ancient Sumerians believed that powerful gods lived in the sky, they built huge structures called ziggurats with steps climbing up the top religious ceremonies were held at the very topof the ziggurats.
