  1. The Final Sr. Design Presentation The Outline presents somewhat of an example illustration of how a report would be laid out, however, your facts may differ sharply from those shown here.

  2. General Guidelines • Your presentations should be about 25 to 30 minutes • All members of your team should present • You should wear “formal attire” meaning at least nice slacks, white shirt, and tie, (Suits are fine but a Tux is overkill) • Maintain good eye contact • Keep slides readable • When appropriate explain what techniques you used to do things and what classes you got information from • (some of the students there are future Srs who will benefit from seeing how classes they are now taking or will take this fall will contribute to Sr. Design)

  3. Begin with General Background • Black Rock Coal company has found a 5 seam coal deposit near McCleansboro, Illinois • Our charge was to determine whether it is technically and economically feasible to develop a coal mining operation there • We were constrained to produce at least 3 million clean tons of coal each year and distribute it to customers • Your presentation may differ in what you have and you will want to make your slide more clear and interesting that just a plan outline.

  4. Briefly Describe the Mine You Will Recommend • We recommend taking the following land options or making the following land purchases • The mine we recommend is • An underground room and pillar coal operation in the Illinois #6 coal with production access by a belt decline with separate man and ventilation shafts • The operation would produce 3.5 million clean tons per year for 36 years • Following this we will focus on the #2 coal which is metallurgical grade and will be mined by longwall via extended ramps and shafts • Although beyond the 56 year time horizon of this project, mining would then move to the #7 coal seam. • We feel that mining the #5 coal seam is not a viable option • (One could also say – we configured a mine like such and such and found the mine to be infeasible for technical or economic reasons)

  5. Present the Economic Feasibility • The mine will require a capital investment of XXX dollars over a 2 year construction phase • The mine should generate a positive cash flow over the 56 years of projected life • Our cost for mining, processing and shipping Illinois #6 coal is estimated at YY dollars per ton. • The coal is projected to sell for WW dollars per ton • At a 12% real before tax rate of return the project has an NPV of ZZZ, with a PVR of T.TT and an IRR of RR% • This meets all the companies investment requirements

  6. Mine Setting • Our mine is in the middle of national forest • The surrounding towns are • Our Climate is mild with occasional ice and snow but we will be able to run an underground mine year round • We will need • Workforce • Equipment repair and parts • Water, Power, Fuel, Explosives …. • Transportation to market

  7. The Following Will be Used to Meet Needs • We have towns of 50,000 people within 25 minutes of the site • The population has been involved in mining for generations (you might have to explain training or recruiting if not true) • We will get equipment servicing by ….. • We will get our utility connections needed in the following ways … • We will ship by the following routes at a cost of ….

  8. Our Location Provides the Following Special Challenges • Brutal winter snow and drifting • Rabid surrounding land owners • National Forest Lands that limit ability to build roads • National Forest Lands that limit amount of land that can be disturbed or left as an open pit • National Forest Lands that will limit air emissions of SO2 gas • During your presentation, but not all at once you will need to show how you are meeting the special challenges

  9. Our Orebody Provides Special Mining Challenges • Our coal seams are located closely enough together that interaction is a problem • Our deposit has roof that will not cave well • Our deposit has roof that will weather poorly • Our deposit has bad floor strata that threatens stability • Our deposit has major fault systems that threaten slope stability • Our deposit is so large relative to the market that production will be market constrained

  10. To Meet these challenges • We did the following • We scheduled production only 8 months per year to avoid the winter • We mined coal seams top down • We started with the most lucrative top seam that gave us sufficient distance from our metallurgical coal seam • We chose pit slopes in the following manner • We determined the following to be market sizes and matched our production to be X% of the market size

  11. To Mine In this way we need • The following equipment • The following manpower • We will run our ventilation like • We will run our haulage ……. • Our mine progression will expand out like shown in these figures

  12. We Will Process Our Ore • In the following way • Here is our basic flowsheet • It will run like this • Our process waste will go here

  13. This Plan Meets Environmental and Community Concerns By …..

  14. Add Details About Your Mine as Appropriate after your general introduction • If needed subjects are not covered by these slides.
