Definitions: • Gateway cities refers to key ports of arrival into the country. • Geographicalfeaturesmay include but are not limited to – mountains, rivers, lakes, fjords. • Attractionsrefers to both constructed and natural attractions existing at a destination which are of interest to tourists. For example – constructed attractions may include museums, buildings, zoos; natural attractions may include forests, lakes, geothermal areas. • Activitiesrefers to commercial activities at a destination which are of interest to tourists. For example – excursions, ballooning, boat cruises, nature trek, city tour. • Eventsrefers to staged events which occur on a regular basis at a destination which are of interest to tourists. For example – exhibitions, festivals, tradeshows. • Featuresof attractions, activities, and eventsmay include but are not limited to – what there is to see and do, location, duration, time of year, facilities/services available, opening hours, price range.

  4. Task 1 – Inbound Tourism (Using Appendix 1.1) a) What were the total arrival numbers and total expenditure that New Zealand experienced from inbound tourism? Total Arrival Numbers: ________________________ Total Expenditure: NZD _______________________ b) Complete the following table with the percentage of total arrivals for each purpose of visit listed. For example: Other 274,700 divided by Total International Visitors 2,514,209 = 0.109259 Rounded = 11% (Using Appendix 1.2)

  5. Task 2 – Generating Markets (Using Appendix 1.1) a) Rank the top five (5) generating markets, from highest to lowest based on total arrival numbers. b) Rank the top five (5) generating markets, from highest to lowest based on total expenditure.

  6. Task 3 – Host Regions (Using Appendix 1.4) a) Identify the top five (5) host regions, ranked from highest to lowest based on international visitor numbers. (Using Appendix 1.3) b) Identify the top five (5) host regions, ranked from highest to lowest based on international person nights. (Using map provided) c) Locate each host region identified in (a) and (b) above on a map.

  7. Task 4 – Domestic Tourism (Using Appendix 1.5) a) Show the significance of domestic tourism in New Zealand by completing the following table: (Using Appendix 1.7) b) Rank the top five (5) domestic generating regions, from highest to lowest based on total overnight trips.

  8. Task 5 – Domestic Host Regions (Using Appendix 1.6) a) Identify the top five (5) host regions, ranked from highest to lowest based on domestic overnight trips. (Using Appendix 1.3) b) Identify the top five (5) host regions, ranked from highest to lowest based on domestic person nights. c) Locate each host region identified in (a) and (b) above on a map.

  10. Task 7 – Destination New Zealand a) Geographical features Identify a total of at least six (6) geographical features. The following four (4) must be included: 1. Rotorua’s geothermal areas 2. Lake Taupo 3. The Southern Alps 4. Milford Sound 5. ___________________ (specify another geographical feature) 6. ___________________ (specify another geographical feature) Describe two (2) points of interest to tourists for each of the geographical features above.

  11. Task 7 – Destination New Zealand b) Attractions Identify five (5) different attractions of interest to tourists. Describe three (3) features for each attraction.

  16. Example: Auckland Seafood Festival Features include: • Three days of fun, ocean-fresh seafood and entertainment. It's also an opportunity to learn about, and interact with some of the 100 edible species found in New Zealand waters. • The festival is the main event during Auckland’s anniversary weekend celebrations.
